IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graphs illustrate the data about the speed camera fines and the road accident fatalities caused by over-speeding drivers in Britain during the period of eight years, while the tables give data about the people's assessing on speed cameras.
Overall, speed camera fines had increased substantially, whereas road accident casualities fluctuated throughout the period. People surveys showed that majority did not think road accidents decreased, but they were installed to raise revenue.
The line graph shows that after installing speed cameras, in the first year fines were 2 million which increased gradually next five years to 8 million. In the fifth year it dramatically increased to 1,600,000. Regarding road accident fatalities, they fluctuated over the period of eight years, started off aorund 3,100 and increased before a dip to 3,000 in the fourth year. After that these deaths rose up to approximately 3,400 at the end of the year.
The tables data showed people surveys, majority thought (60%) speed cameras did not lessen accidents while only 8% did not know about it. Similarly, 71% people voted that they were installed to raise revenuse while 26% believed that they improved road safety and just 3% did not know any thing. On the other hand, 56% voted in fav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main contrast: fines rose markedly, while fatalities fluctuated, and you report the survey’s dominant views on accident reduction and revenue. However, several key figures are seriously misreported: fines began at about 200,000, not 2 million, and reached about 1.6 million, not 8 million. The description of the fatalities also gives an inaccurate low point and does not clearly track the year-by-year pattern. The overview is relevant but incomplete: it could also note that most respondents considered there to be too many cameras. The final survey finding is cut off, so the table is not fully covered. More accurate selection and reporting of the main data would make the account more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to the graphs and then the survey, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Regarding” help signal shifts. However, progression is weakened by unclear or inaccurate references, including “in the fifth year” followed by “to 1,600,000,” which does not make the sequence of figures easy to follow. The final paragraph ends abruptly at “56% voted in fav,” leaving the last survey result unfinished. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “while” and “Similarly.” Organise the data into complete paragraphs, describe each chart in a clear sequence, and use comparisons to connect related figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “substantially,” “fatalities,” and “raise revenue,” which helps communicate the topic. However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “people’s assessing,” “road accident casualities,” “revenuse,” and “voted in fav” reduce precision. “Caused by over-speeding drivers” also adds a causal claim that the chart does not establish. Some expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “showed that majority” and “the tables data showed people surveys.” Aim for accurate collocations and spelling, and choose neutral reporting language such as “respondents believed” rather than “voted” when describing survey answers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “speed camera fines had increased substantially, whereas road accident casualities fluctuated.” However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are frequent enough to make some passages difficult to interpret. For example, “in the first year fines were 2 million which increased gradually next five years to 8 million” lacks clear grammatical links and has an unclear subject for “which.” The phrase “started off … and increased before a dip” also needs a clearer parallel structure, while “majority thought” is missing an article. Check articles, clause structure, and consistent tense, and break long descriptions into shorter, complete sentences.
