The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The graphs illustrate the number of speeding drivers caught by speed cameras and the number of road accident fatalities in Britain over an eight-year period after speed cameras were introduced. The tables present the results of a survey about people`s opinions on speed cameras.

Overall, the number of drivers fined for speeding increased dramatically throughout the period, while the number of road accident deaths remains relatively stable with only slight fluctuations. In addition, most people believed that speed cameras help reduce road accidents.

At the beginning of the period, around 7000,000 drivers were caught speeding. This figure rose gradually the to approximately 900,000 by the fifth year. After that, the increase became much sharper, reaching about 1.2 million in the seventh year and finishing at nearly 1.6 million in the eighth year.

In contrast, road accident fatalities showed only minor changes. The number started at roughly 3,000, increased slightly to around 3,200, then fell to just under 3,000 in the middle of the period. It remained close to this level before ending at a little over 3,000 deaths.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main trends in the graphs well, identifying the significant increase in fines and the stability of fatalities. However, the task instructions explicitly mention that the tables show survey results regarding people's opinions on speed cameras. You mentioned these in the introduction and provided a brief summary in the overview, but you failed to describe the actual data from the tables in the body paragraphs. To achieve a higher band, you must integrate the specific data points from the tables into your analysis rather than just mentioning their existence. The report is otherwise well-structured and focuses on the key features of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that separate the two main trends (fines and fatalities). The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'At the beginning of the period', and 'In contrast' helps guide the reader through the information effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas. The progression of information is clear, and the relationship between the different parts of the report is easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the graph data and the table data is more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'increased dramatically', 'remains relatively stable', 'slight fluctuations', and 'sharper'. These choices are precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated synonyms or collocations to describe the data points more dynamically. Overall, the lexical range is adequate for the task requirements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the control of grammar is generally strong. There is a minor error in the third paragraph ('rose gradually the to'), which appears to be a slip. Punctuation is generally accurate. The use of complex structures, such as 'while the number of road accident deaths remains relatively stable', shows good control. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent accuracy in sentence construction and aim for a slightly wider variety of complex grammatical forms.
