IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The graph chart below displays the proportion of drivers in Britain that have been caught while driving too fast and that was by speed cameras placed on different roads. And it also demonstrates the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year timeline since the introduction of speed cameras. And the tables exhibit the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Overall, the percentage of fines paid for reckless speeding has rose up over the years. On the other hand, road accident fatalities have been fluctuating over the same period of time.
The number of speed camera fines have increased dramatically over the years, as it started with around 200,2000 in the first year of the cameras installation to over 1,400,000 in the 8th year. Conversely, the number of people dying in road accidents started with slightly over 3,000 person in the first year and then went down to around 2,900 person in the 4th year only to go up again to almost 3,500 person in the 8th year.
When people were asked about whether the existence of speed cameras reduce the number of accidents, 60% of the answers were no while only 32% were yes and 8% were don't know. And in the survey about the reason for the installation of speed cameras, 26% of the people said it is to improve the road safety, and 71% thought it is to raise revenue, and only 3% didn't know.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task, including the graphs and the survey tables. You have identified key trends, such as the rise in fines and the fluctuation in fatalities, and provided relevant data points. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions the trends, it could be more analytical by highlighting the contrast between the rising fines and the lack of a clear downward trend in fatalities. The data selection is generally accurate, though ensure that you do not misinterpret the figures (e.g., '200,2000' is likely a typo for 200,000). Overall, the information is presented clearly and fulfills the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The report is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Conversely' and 'On the other hand,' to signal shifts in the data. However, the use of 'And' at the beginning of several sentences is repetitive and somewhat informal, which affects the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the trends from the survey results. To improve, try to vary your linking words and avoid starting sentences with conjunctions like 'And' to create a more sophisticated and academic tone.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'fluctuating,' 'reckless speeding,' and 'installation.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'has rose up' (should be 'has risen') and '3,000 person' (should be '3,000 people'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Incorporating more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to statistical trends would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'the number of speed camera fines have increased' (subject-verb agreement error: 'number' is singular), 'has rose up' (incorrect verb tense), and '3,000 person' (pluralization error). Additionally, there are some awkward phrasings like 'that was by speed cameras.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
