Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to cover both the graphs and the survey tables, but the analysis is inconsistent and lacks clarity. While the trends for speed camera fines are mentioned, the description of the accident fatalities is inaccurate and confusing. Furthermore, the inclusion of personal opinions ('I think') is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires an objective summary of data. The interpretation of the survey results is also disjointed, failing to clearly link the data to the provided categories. To improve, focus on reporting the data objectively without personal commentary and ensure that all figures are accurately represented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow between sentences is often weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'in first year' and 'during the time period'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the survey results, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information, as the survey data is mixed with the graph data in a way that disrupts the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'peoples more and more' instead of 'increased' and 'rosed' instead of 'rose'. The student struggles with precise terminology for describing trends, relying on basic descriptors. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the frequent errors in collocation prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more precise trend-related terms would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('accidental death are decreases'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack the necessary complexity expected at higher levels. While the reader can generally understand the intended meaning, the persistent errors in basic grammar and tense consistency are distracting. To improve, the student should focus on mastering simple sentence structures before attempting more complex ones, and pay closer attention to verb forms and pluralization.
