SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided graph compares the figure of speed camera fines and the number of people who have been killed in road accidents, while the table delineates people's opinions on speed cameras in the UK.

Overall, it is clear that the numbers of speed camera fines increased rapidly over the period. However, the figure of road accidents remained quite stable during the years and most of the feedbacks was negative.

Looking at the data in more detail, the figure of speed camera fines stood at 200,000 in first year, which increased significantly over the period. At fifth year, the fines number accounted for about 500,000 before rising rapidly to around 1,600,000 in eighth year.

In terms of accidents, the figure made up approximately 3,100 in first year before increasing to about 3,400 in second year. The figure remained stable before declining to around 3,000. By the end of the period, the number increased to approximately 3,400 again. Maximum people believed the cameras failed to reduce the number of accidents and many people thought the cameras was for raise revenue for the government and maximum people said the number of cameras was too many.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task, including the graphs and the survey table. You have identified the key trends, such as the rapid increase in fines and the relative stability of accident rates. However, the analysis of the survey data is somewhat underdeveloped. Instead of using phrases like 'maximum people,' which is inaccurate, you should have provided specific percentages or proportions from the table to support your summary. While the main features are highlighted, the report would benefit from a more precise comparison between the data sets to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The report is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Overall,' 'Looking at the data in more detail,' and 'In terms of,' which help the reader follow the progression of information. However, the transition between the graph data and the survey table is a bit abrupt. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly rather than relying on repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'delineates,' 'increased significantly,' and 'remained stable.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'maximum people' (which is not standard English) and 'feedbacks' (feedback is an uncountable noun). Additionally, the phrase 'for raise revenue' is grammatically incorrect. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that you use nouns and verbs in their correct forms. Expanding your range of reporting verbs would also enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some noticeable errors, such as 'most of the feedbacks was' (subject-verb agreement) and 'cameras was for raise revenue' (incorrect preposition and verb form). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Ensure that you proofread your work to catch these minor slips before finalizing your report.
