The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graphs illustrate fines levied on drivers who are captured driving too fast by speed surveillance cameras placed in roads and the other shows the amount of individuals that have been killed in road accident for eight years since the inception of speed camera fines

Overall, the speed camera fines a steady increase in fines at the beginning of the first four years and a sharp increase on camera fines for the remaining four years, while the amount of road accidents that have occurred as shown in the graph begins with a higher death toll but fluctuates as year progresses.

During the early year of the installation of speed cameras, 200,000 thousand fines where levied and this amount steadily increases in a slow pace till the fifth year when the fines where being skyrocketed starting from 800,000 to 1, 600,000.

Though fines are being placed, the rate of fatalities were very high. In the first year, the death toll was slightly above 2000. From the information presented, it seems as if the increase in road accidents fueled the rising figures of speed camera fines. In the second year, as the road fatalities increase to about 3000, the speed camera fines also witnessed a slight change of about 300,000 that same year.

In the fourth year, there was also an increase on camera fines of about 500,000 with a decline on road accident of about 3000, the least recorded throughout the eight year period.

In the last year, there was an increase on road accident of about 3,400 fatalities. This was probably the reason for the increase on camera fines that same period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends in the data, such as the steady increase in fines and the fluctuations in fatalities. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the survey tables mentioned in the prompt, which are completely ignored. To achieve a higher band, you must integrate all parts of the task. Additionally, some data points are described inaccurately; for instance, stating that fines 'skyrocketed' from 800,000 to 1,600,000 is a bit imprecise given the scale. Ensure you provide a more balanced summary that covers both the graphs and the tables provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'In the first year', 'In the second year', 'In the fourth year'). The progression of ideas is logical, but the transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and referencing phrases to connect your points more fluidly rather than relying on a chronological list format.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, such as 'levied', 'inception', and 'fluctuates'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'fines where being skyrocketed' and 'amount of individuals'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing when describing trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency (e.g., 'fines where levied', 'fines where being skyrocketed', 'road fatalities increase'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and incorrect spacing in numbers (e.g., '1, 600,000'). While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 5.5–6.0 range.
