IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph compares the number of drivers in Britain who were fined for over speeding on the roads and number of people died in road accidents over an eight-year period.
In the first year, around 200,000 drivers were caught by speeding. This figure rose steadily to approximately 500,00 in the fourth years. After slight increases in the fifth year, the number grow rapidly, reaching about 800,000 in the sixth year, 1.2 Million in the seventh year and noticeable increase up to 1.6 million in the eight year.
By contrast, the number of road accident death fluctuated between 3000 to 34000 throughout the eight years, and with a small decline in the fourth year before rising again towards the end of the period.
According to survey, 60% of people believed that speed cameras did not reduce the road accidents, while 32% of people that they did. Furthermore, 71% people believed that the main purpose of the speed cameras was to raise revenue, compared with 26% who felt that they were installed to improve road construction. Finally, 56% of people respondents believed there too many speed on the roads, whereas only 17% thought the current number was right

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task, including the graph trends and the survey data. You have successfully identified the key features, such as the rapid rise in fines and the fluctuation in fatalities. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting; for instance, you stated fatalities fluctuated between 3,000 and 34,000, which is a significant misreading of the scale (likely 300–340). Additionally, the survey data is presented clearly, but the analysis could be more integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed with absolute precision and that you provide a clear overview that highlights the most significant trends across both the graphs and the tables.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The report is logically organized into paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific aspect of the data. There is a clear progression from the graph trends to the survey results. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In the first year', 'By contrast', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow could be smoother. For example, the transition between the graph analysis and the survey data is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'steady', and 'revenue'. However, there are several errors in word choice and form, such as 'over speeding' (should be 'speeding'), 'number grow' (should be 'number grew'), and 'road accident death' (should be 'road accident deaths'). There are also some awkward phrasings like 'there too many speed on the roads'. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and checking for correct word forms, especially when describing statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as '500,00 in the fourth years' (should be '500,000 in the fourth year') and '32% of people that they did' (missing a verb). The subject-verb agreement and pluralization issues (e.g., 'eight year' instead of 'eighth year') are noticeable. Although these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and verb tense consistency will help you achieve a higher band.
