IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided linear charts illustrates the trends in the number of speed camera fines issued and road accidents fatalities in Britain over an eight-year period, while the accompanying tables present public opinion survey data regarding these cameras.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is crystal clear that while the number of speed camera fines experienced a dramatic, exponential increase over the period, road accidents fatalities remained virtually unchanged. This clear lack of correlation between rising fines and improved safety in reflected in public opinion, where a substantial majority of people express doubt regarding the primary motivation behind and effectiveness of speed cameras.
At first glance, it is noticeable that regarding the visual trends, speed camera fines rose steadily from roughly 200,000 in year 1 to around 600,000 in year 5. Following this, the figure accelerated sharply, ultimately reaching a peak of 1.6 million by year 8, marketing an eightfold increase. In stark contrast, road fatalities fluctuated within a narrow margin throughout the entire period. Beginning at approximately 3,100 in Year 1, the number of deaths peaked slightly above 3,300 in Years 2 and 3, dipped to a low of about 3,000 in Year 4, and gradually rose back to nearly 3,400 by Year 8.
Moving further, the survey finding closely reflect these statistical trends, showing predominantly negative attitudes toward speed cameras. Subsequently, a significant majority of respondents, at 60 percent believed that speed cameras do not successfully reduce road accidents, whereas only 32% thought they do. Furthermore, 71% of those surveyed asserted that the main reason for installing these cameras is to raise revenue for the government, compared to just 26% who viewed them as a measure to improve road safety. Finally, when asked about camera density, 56% felt there were too many speed cameras on the roads, while only 17% believed the number was about right, and 19% felt there were too few.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends in the graphs and accurately summarised the survey data. The comparison between the rising number of fines and the stagnant fatality rates is well-highlighted, and you have successfully integrated the survey findings to provide a comprehensive report. The data is accurately reported, and the key features are clearly identified and supported with specific figures from the charts and tables. The response is well-structured and meets the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report perfectly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the trend analysis of the graphs, and the summary of the survey data. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Looking from an overall perspective', 'Following this', 'In stark contrast', and 'Moving further'. These transitions help the reader follow your argument smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets, ensuring the information is presented in a coherent and easy-to-follow manner throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary, which allows for precise descriptions of the data. Phrases such as 'dramatic, exponential increase', 'virtually unchanged', 'fluctuated within a narrow margin', and 'stark contrast' are used effectively. There is a good awareness of collocation and style appropriate for an academic report. While there are minor slips, such as 'marketing' instead of 'marking' and 'finding' instead of 'findings', these do not impede communication and are rare. The vocabulary is sophisticated and contributes to the overall clarity and professional tone of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response displays a wide range of grammatical structures with a high level of accuracy. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'while the number of speed camera fines experienced a dramatic, exponential increase... road accidents fatalities remained virtually unchanged.' Punctuation is generally accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. There are very occasional minor slips, such as 'road accidents fatalities' (should be 'road accident fatalities') and 'is reflected' (should be 'is reflected'), but these are infrequent and do not detract from the overall high quality of the writing. The control over grammar is strong throughout.
