IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graphs illustrate the speed camera fines and road accident fatalities in Britain over an eight-year period since speed cameras were introduced. While the table gives information about results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Overall, fines increased sharply while road accident fatalities started from a significantly high number and then fluctuated a little bit but remained almost same till end. Survey results tell us that most people were not very satisfied with installation of speed cameras.
Speed camera fines were only 200,000 in the first year of installation. It went up steadily to 600,000 by 5th year and then rose dramatically to more than double which is 1,600,000. On the other hand, there was no significant change in fatalities number. They were approximately 3100 in start, marginally went down to 3000 by 4th year and gradually increased to almost 3500 by the end.
The survey show us that 60% people think that speed cameras didn't reduce road accident fatalities . 71% people believe that they are just installed to raise revenue. 56% think that there are too many speed cameras on the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task, including the graphs and the survey table. You have identified the key trends, such as the sharp increase in fines and the relative stability of fatalities, and included relevant data points. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions the trends, it could be more analytical by linking the lack of correlation between fines and fatalities. The survey data is presented accurately, though the summary of the survey results could be more integrated into the overall narrative rather than just listed at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The report is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for the graphs and the survey. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'While', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the two distinct data sets (graphs vs. table) could be smoother to create a more cohesive report. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different types of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'steadily', and 'dramatically'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'fatalities number' instead of 'number of fatalities' and 'in start' instead of 'at the start'. The vocabulary is generally functional and appropriate for an academic report, but it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would elevate the response to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The survey show us' (subject-verb agreement), '60% people' (missing 'of'), and 'remained almost same' (missing 'the'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Punctuation is generally handled well, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate better control over complex grammatical forms.
