IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar charts show the number of British drivers caught over-speeding, and the number of deaths in road accidents for an eight-year period, and the tables present a survey on the public's view on speed cameras. The number of British drivers that drive too fast has exponentially increased while the number of road accident fatalities fluctuated slightly over the eight years, and this is reflected in the public's view as most people believe speed cameras are not important.
Since the introduction of speed camera fines, there has been a consistent increase in its number rising most rapidly in the last three years by almost a million compared to a two hundred thousand increase in its first five years. Despite the increase in cases of over-speeding the number of road accidents has remained fairly constant over the eight years ranging between three thousand and three thousand five hundred fatalities per year.
The lack of correlation between the number of cases and number of fatalities is observed by the public and reflected in the survey as the largest proportion believed the speed cameras were too many and had no effect on the number of accidents. Additionally, only about a fifth of the people included in the survey believe speed cameras improve road safety while almost 70% believe the authorities use it to generate revenue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all parts of the task by describing the trends in the bar charts and summarizing the survey data. You provided a clear overview in the introduction and highlighted key features, such as the exponential increase in fines versus the stable fatality rate. To reach a higher band, ensure you include more specific data points from the charts to support your claims. For instance, when mentioning the 'exponential increase' in fines, citing the starting and ending figures would provide more precision. Your analysis of the survey data is accurate and well-integrated into the report, effectively contrasting the public's perception with the statistical reality.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The report is logically organized, with a clear progression from the visual data to the survey findings. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different data sets. You use cohesive devices such as 'Despite the increase', 'Additionally', and 'while' to link ideas. However, some transitions could be smoother; for example, the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be strengthened to better emphasize the contrast between the data and public opinion. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the referencing is generally clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'exponentially increased', 'road accident fatalities', and 'lack of correlation' are appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'its number' (referring to fines) which is slightly ambiguous, and 'cases of over-speeding' which could be more precisely phrased as 'instances of speeding'. While you use some less common vocabulary, further variety in reporting verbs and descriptive adjectives would enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'the number of British drivers that drive too fast' (which should ideally be 'who drive') and 'the authorities use it' (where 'it' lacks a clear singular antecedent, as 'cameras' is plural). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences could benefit from more careful comma placement to improve readability. Overall, your control of grammar is solid and does not impede communication.
