IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graphs illustrate the number of people caught speeding and the number of road accident fatalities, whereas the table shows the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
The number and amount of speeding fines can be seen rising since the first year when speed cameras were installed. On the other hand, road accident fatalities remain approximately the same. Speed camera fines gradually increased from $200,000 in year 1 to almost $600,000 in the year after, at which point it saw a sharp rise, reaching $1,600,000 at present. On the other hand, road accident fatalities remained between 3,000 and 3,500 from year 1 to present, with most fatalities in year 2 and least in year 4.
According to the survey, 60% of the population does not believe that speed cameras reduce the number of road accidents, and 71% say that the cameras were installed to raise revenue. While 19% of people believe that there are few cameras installed, a majority of 56% voted for too many camera being installed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the key features of the data, including the trends in fines and fatalities, and the survey results. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph that highlights the main trends or contrasts. While you mention the figures, you could improve by grouping the data more effectively to show the relationship between the variables. For instance, noting the lack of correlation between the rising fines and the stable fatality rate would have provided a more analytical approach. Ensure you clearly distinguish between the trends in the graphs and the static data in the table to provide a more comprehensive overview.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into three paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the other hand' and 'According to the survey' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences within the second paragraph is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for an Academic Task 1, but the connection between the graph data and the survey results could be more explicitly stated to improve overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'fatalities', and 'revenue'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using '$' (dollars) when the prompt refers to the number of fines, not the monetary value. Additionally, phrases like 'at which point it saw a sharp rise' are functional but could be more precise. To improve, focus on using more specific academic collocations and ensure that your terminology accurately reflects the units provided in the prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'too many camera being installed' (should be 'cameras') and 'least in year 4' (should be 'the least'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Your control over sentence structure is sufficient, but increasing the variety of complex grammatical forms would enhance your score.
