SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graphs illustrate the number of drivers in Britain driving to fast and catching by speed cameras placed on the roads, and the number of people died in road accidents, over an eight year period since the installation of speed cameras. The table depicts the results of a survey on people's opinions about speed cameras.

Overall, it is clear that speed camera fines showed an upward trend, while road accidents fatalities remained stable despite some fluctuation throughout the period. People gave different opinion on speed cameras.

In the first year, the number of drivers who caught driving to fast by speed cameras and got fine was 200,000, while this figure increased significantly to 600,000 after five year. However, in the last year it reached 1,600,000. In contrast, road accidents was recorded 3,100 in first year, while this value remained stable consistent with small change, the final value was 3,200 in the last year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main trends in the line graphs, but it fails to address the table data entirely, as the report ends abruptly mid-sentence. While the overview identifies the main trends, the lack of information regarding the survey results means the task is not fully addressed. The data selection is generally accurate, but the incomplete nature of the response significantly impacts the overall task achievement score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In the first year', and 'In contrast'. However, the flow is interrupted by the incomplete final paragraph. The referencing is sometimes mechanical, and the lack of a conclusion or a completed analysis of the table makes the progression of ideas feel disjointed and unfinished.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. There are several errors in word choice and form, such as 'driving to fast' (too fast), 'catching by' (caught by), and 'road accidents fatalities' (road accident fatalities). These errors are noticeable but do not completely impede communication. To improve, you should focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'number of drivers... catching by' (passive voice error), 'people died' (should be 'people who died'), and 'road accidents was recorded' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical slips limits the clarity of the writing.
