SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line charts compare the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught in cameras placed in roads and take fines for excessive speed of driving, and road accident fatalities, over an eight-year period. In contrast, the table represents the results of a survey on individuals' opinion on speed cameras.

To begin with, in the first year, speed camera fines stood at 200,000, while over the period of three years it increased slightly from 200,000 to around 500,000. At the eighth year, the amount of fines reached at about 1,600,000.

Furthermore, about road accident fatalities, approximately 3000 people death were recorded for first year. At the end of the survey, road accident flunctuated between around 3000 and 3300.

However, 60% of people were disagree with speed cameras reduce the number of accidents, whereas 32% of individuals were agree. Moreover, the highest proportion of people were satisfied with to raise revenue for the installation of speed cameras. 50% of people thought about the number of speed cameras are too many.

Overall, it can be seen that, the number of speed camera fines were rose dramatically over the periods, while road accident fatalities were altered from about 3000 to 3300. Nevertheless, 60% of people were dissarisfied with reduction of speed cameras. 71% of individuals agree to raise revenue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by describing the trends in the graphs and summarizing the survey data. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the description of the line graphs lacks a clear overview of the relationship between the two variables, and the survey data is presented as a list of statistics rather than a synthesis of the key findings. While the main features are identified, the lack of a clear, integrated summary at the beginning or end limits the score. The data points are generally accurate, but the interpretation of the survey results could be more precise to better highlight the contrast between public opinion and the actual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Overall' are used to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of these devices feel slightly mechanical or are used incorrectly, such as 'In contrast' in the introduction, which does not accurately reflect the relationship between the graphs and the table. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the connection between the survey percentages and the specific survey questions could be more explicitly linked to improve the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey the main points. There are some attempts at using topic-specific language like 'road accident fatalities' and 'proportion'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'take fines' instead of 'receive fines' or 'pay fines', and 'people death' instead of 'deaths'. Spelling errors like 'flunctuated' and 'dissarisfied' also occur. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors rather than more precise academic terminology that would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include '60% of people were disagree' (should be 'disagreed'), 'the number of speed cameras are too many' (should be 'is too high'), and 'the number of speed camera fines were rose' (a double verb error). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, although they do not completely impede communication. To improve, the student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement, correct tense usage, and the proper construction of passive voice sentences, which are essential for describing data.
