IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given line graphs depict the number of drivers who have been caught driving too fast and the number of people killed in road accidents by the speed cameras, placed on roads over an eight-year period in Britain. The tables show the reviews of people surveyed for speed cameras.
Overall, there was an exponential increase in fines encountered by the speed camera along with minor fluctuations in road accident fatalities over the period. However, maximum votes stand against the actual purpose of the speed cameras.
When the speed cameras were newly installed, it caught nearly 200,000 people for over speeding in the first year, which is comparatively the lowest among all the following years. The numbers rose gradually to 800,000 till the end of six years before taking a significant upsurge to approximately 1,600,000 fines in the next two years, being the highest. The number of deaths due to road accidents stood at nearly 3,100 at the beginning of the period and fluctuated minimally throughout eight years and ended up being 3,200.
While regarding the reviews, 60% of the total people surveyed believe that speed cameras are unable to pose a reduction in the rate of road accidents while 71% of them argued the reason of installation was to raise the revenue rather than improvement in road safety. However, 56% accounted for the usage of too many speed cameras on the road rather than just the right amount.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all parts of the prompt by describing both the trends in the graphs and the survey data. You provided a clear overview and selected key features, such as the initial and final figures for fines and fatalities. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data sets. For instance, you mention the rise in fines and the stability of fatalities but do not explicitly contrast these trends to highlight the lack of correlation. Additionally, ensure that your overview is more analytical; instead of saying 'maximum votes stand against', you could summarize the public's skepticism more precisely. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers the requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'While regarding the reviews' and 'However' to transition between ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the graphical data from the survey results. To reach a higher band, ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the two distinct parts of the task (graphs vs. tables) could be more fluid. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is clear throughout the report, and the information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with reasonable precision. Phrases like 'exponential increase', 'minor fluctuations', and 'significant upsurge' are used effectively to describe the data. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'fines encountered by the speed camera' (fines are issued or imposed) and 'pose a reduction' (a reduction is achieved or brought about). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the use of more sophisticated, natural-sounding language. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and collocations related to statistical trends would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'it caught nearly 200,000 people' (referring to 'cameras' as 'it') and 'argued the reason of installation' (argued that the reason for installation). Additionally, 'accounted for the usage' is slightly awkward in this context. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining the use of prepositions in complex sentences.
