IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Both the graphs show cursory view on the data regarding the prevalence of speed fines resulting from significantly fast driving and mortality rate due to road accidents. In addition to these graphs there is statistical survey of locals regarding use of speed cameras ,reason for it and their numbers. The speed camera fines increase marginally from first to fifth year .Subsequently, Fines reported by speed cameras surge drastically following the fifth year till the eighth year. However the graph outlining the road accident fatalities shows negligible fluctuation over the year. There is gradual increase from first to second year. But the graph level off till third year . It tails off from third to fourth year. After fourth year it rises sharply and remains stagnant till six year . Roughly after six year the graph demonstrates stable surge . Moreover, the survey depicts that speed cameras has not reduced the fatality rate . The reason for camera establishment is to upgrade road safety and the proportion of speed cameras install on roads are numerous. Overall, both the data draw attention to the view that fines are rapidly increasing whereas there is no effect of cameras on mortality rate

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have identified the main trends in the graphs, but the response lacks a clear overview of the survey data. While you mention the survey, you do not provide specific figures or clear comparisons from the tables, which is a requirement for a complete response. The description of the trends is somewhat mechanical, focusing on year-by-year changes rather than highlighting the most significant features or overall patterns. To improve, ensure you synthesise the information rather than just listing it, and make sure all parts of the prompt—including the tables—are fully addressed with supporting data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into a single paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow. A report of this nature should be structured with an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the graphs and the survey data. While you use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'Moreover', the flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed. The progression of ideas is not always logical, particularly when jumping between the graphs and the survey results. Using clear paragraphing and a wider range of linking words would significantly improve the clarity and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prevalence', 'mortality rate', and 'fluctuation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'cursory view on the data' (which is not standard) and 'stable surge' (which is contradictory). Some phrasing is also slightly awkward, such as 'reason for camera establishment'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices accurately reflect the data presented in the charts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, there are issues with subject-verb agreement ('speed cameras has not reduced'), missing articles ('on roads are numerous'), and incorrect preposition usage. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack proper punctuation, which affects the overall readability. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit your score. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with pluralisation and verb forms.
