IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The rendered bar graph illustrates the information about the results of survey conducted for the britian car drivers who have been recorded driving at high speed by speed cameras, and the count of individuals killed in road accidents, in between the eight-year period after the introduction of speed cameras and the report of people’s opinion about these cameras. The data is calibrated into numbers and percentile.
After taking the statistical data into account, it may be inferred that from first year the ratio of fines for over-speeding remained between 200,000 to 600,000 which is then dramatically increased to 1,600,000 in the eight year. Interestingly, the number of road accident fatalities remained fluctuating between 3,100 to 3,500 in given eight years.
Turning toward the test of the details, it can be clearly seen that majority of people declined that speed cameras resulted in reducing number of accidents on roads while, only 32% people agreed. Moreover, 71% individuals opinion about the main reason for installation of speed cameras was to raise revenue. Lastly, 56% individuals voted that there were more than enough speed cameras on roads

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task, including the graphs and the survey tables. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it merely describes the data types rather than highlighting the key trends, such as the inverse relationship between the rise in fines and the stability of fatalities. While the data is presented, the description of the survey results lacks precision, particularly in how the percentages are integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview synthesizes the main trends rather than just listing what the graphs show, and provide a more analytical comparison of the data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for the graphs, and a section for the survey results. Cohesive devices such as 'Interestingly', 'Turning toward', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. The transition between the graph data and the survey data is abrupt. Improving the use of referencing and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence and progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts at topic-specific language like 'calibrated', 'statistical data', and 'fatalities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'declined that speed cameras resulted in' (should be 'disagreed that') and '71% individuals opinion' (should be '71% of individuals' opinions'). The phrasing is sometimes repetitive, and the vocabulary lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding grammatical errors in noun phrases will improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the britian car drivers' (capitalization and spelling), 'in between the eight-year period' (redundant preposition), and '56% individuals voted' (missing 'of'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and the accurate construction of complex noun phrases.
