SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two line graph illustrate changes in the number of driver caught speeding by cameras and road accident fatalities over an eight-year period, while the tables present public opinions about speed cameras.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully addressed all parts of the prompt by describing both the trends in the line graphs and the data from the tables. You provided a clear overview that highlights the main trends and contrasts, which is essential for a high score. The data selection is accurate, and you have effectively compared the figures for speeding offences and fatalities. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed accurately; for instance, the jump from 6,000 to 800,000 in your text seems to be a misreading of the graph's scale or units, which impacts the accuracy of your reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The report is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the data. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'Regarding' to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the overview to the line graphs and finally the survey results. To improve, ensure that referencing is precise; for example, 'thier' is a recurring spelling error that slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'dramatically', 'fluctuated', and 'unfavourable'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'thier' (their), 'thr' (the), and 'slacked' (likely a typo for 'caught' or 'recorded'), which detract from the professional tone. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, these recurring errors in basic spelling and word choice limit your score. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling mistakes would significantly enhance your lexical performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The two line graph illustrate...' and '...60% of people did not believe cameras reduced accidents, compared with 30% who thought they did.' While the meaning is generally clear, there are grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement ('The two line graph illustrate' should be 'graphs illustrate') and missing articles. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. Increasing your control over basic grammatical accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
