IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given line graphs illustrates the information about the speed camera fines and road accident fatalities, where it is very evident that number of fines from the year 1 to year 4 have a constant increment in its number, but for the road accidents, the trend remains the same.
It is very evident that the number of speed camera fines have been increasing significantly every year, which reached the bench mark of 1 million in the eighth year, which concludes that are total failure in there task.
Furthermore, the road accident fatalities has been falling in the range of 3,000 to 3,500 throughout eight years. Additionally, it is very evident that majority of population thinks that speed cameras have not created any productive results for reducing road accidents, which is completely different from the expected outcomes for reducing road accidents.
Therefore, it can be concluded that, despite of the instillation of speed cameras, the cases of fatalities are completely unaffected and they have not contributed to uplift the situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to adequately address the task. While it mentions the graphs, it ignores the provided tables entirely, which is a significant omission. The analysis is superficial and relies on subjective interpretation rather than objective reporting of data. For instance, claiming the cameras are a 'total failure' is an opinion, not a data-driven observation. The response lacks a clear overview of the main trends, and the data points mentioned are vague and sometimes inaccurate based on the provided visual information. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are covered and focus on describing the data objectively without adding personal commentary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate, such as the use of 'furthermore' and 'therefore' to connect ideas that do not follow a clear analytical path. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between the description of the graphs and the survey results is abrupt. The overall structure lacks the cohesion expected at higher bands, as the ideas do not flow smoothly from one to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'very evident' are used multiple times, which reduces the sophistication of the writing. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'instillation' (instead of 'installation') and 'uplift the situation'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision, relying on basic descriptors rather than academic terminology suitable for a report. Expanding your range of synonyms and focusing on accurate collocations for data description will help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'graphs illustrates' and 'number of fines... have'. There are also issues with sentence structure, including run-on sentences and awkward phrasing like 'which concludes that are total failure in there task'. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, they are often faulty. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement and ensure that relative clauses are used correctly. Proofreading for common errors like 'there' versus 'their' is also essential.
