SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graphs illustrate the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught over speeding and people killed in road accidents in last eight years after the introduction of speed cameras place on roads. Moreover, the tables provides statistical analysis of people's opinion on speed camera.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task, including the line graphs and the survey tables. You have identified the key trends, such as the increase in fines and the fluctuation in fatalities, and provided relevant data points. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For instance, you mention '200,000' and '600,000' without specifying that these figures represent the number of drivers caught, not the revenue generated. Furthermore, the description of the survey data is slightly inaccurate; you state '60% people believes that the speed cameras are not reducing the accidents', whereas the table indicates 60% believe they do not improve road safety. Ensure you distinguish between the units of measurement and interpret the survey categories accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph for the graphs, and a body paragraph for the survey. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'Conversely' helps guide the reader through the information. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow. For example, the transition 'however' in the second paragraph is not capitalized, and the connection between the survey data points could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the information is presented in a clear, coherent manner throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'surged', and 'statistical analysis'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you use 'over speeding' (a noun phrase) where 'speeding' is more natural, and 'raise revenue' should be 'raise revenue' or 'increase revenue'. Additionally, there are minor grammatical errors in word form, such as 'the tables provides' (should be 'provide') and 'the foremost reason of speed camera are' (should be 'is'). Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the tables provides', 'the main purpose... are'), missing articles ('in first year'), and incorrect preposition usage ('reason of'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences starting with lowercase letters ('however', 'the number'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
