IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graphs here illustrate the data of people died in road accidents and those who were caught overspeeding on the roads by the speed cameras. Moreover ther is a table showing the survey of people's thought on installation of speed cameras.

The first graph shows an upward trend during the passage of years giving details about the fines paid by people because of overspeeding. However, the second one shows the number of deaths caused by road accidents which almost remains the same over the years.

The graphs clearly show that the fine collected due to installation of speed cameras have shown a rapid increase from two lacs to sixteen lacs in a time span of eight years. Furthermore, the second graph has not shown much variations except during the fourth year, but it again showed almost the loss of 3000 lives per year.

The survey done by a university professor demonstrates that the speed cameras have not much clear effect in reducing the nymber of accidents while only 30% believes that it has some effect.Infact, around 71% of the people have the opinion that the speed cameras are just installed to raise the ravenue and 56%of the people have the opinion that they are installed more that the requirement and only 19% think that the cameras are few in number.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main trends in the graphs and the key findings in the table. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the relationship between the data sets. While you mention the increase in fines and the stability of fatalities, you do not explicitly contrast these trends as a key feature. Additionally, the data interpretation is slightly inaccurate; for example, you state the fatalities remain at '3000 lives per year', but the graph shows a decline from approximately 3000 to 2000. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary paragraph and double-check your data extraction to ensure precision when reporting figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the graph analysis and the survey data is somewhat abrupt. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'the second one' or 'the second graph', which could be more specific. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices and ensuring that the progression of ideas between sentences is smoother and more varied.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, such as 'upward trend', 'rapid increase', and 'installation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'overspeeding' (speeding), 'lacs' (a non-standard unit for this context), 'nymber', and 'ravenue'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensure you use standard terminology for data reporting, such as 'revenue' instead of 'ravenue' and 'speeding' instead of 'overspeeding'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'people died' (should be 'people who died'), 'there is a table showing the survey of people's thought' (should be 'thoughts'), and '30% believes' (should be '30% believe'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after periods. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure that your sentence construction is consistently accurate.
