IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two graphs represents the data of speed camera penalties and road accident deaths during eight years. Bellow the graphs there are three survey questionnaires and their percentage answers according to the people's opinions.

According to the speed camera fine chart a gradual increase in seen in the first five years but a drastic increase is recorded in the next 3 years. It started from an estimated amount of 200,000 fines and in 5 years reached an amount of 600,000 fines. Furthermore In the last three years it jumped to 1,600,000 fines.

Moving to the next chart, not much difference is recorded during the 8 year period in accident fatalities ratio. In the first year the total number of people killed in road accidents were about 3000, in proceeding years the amount of death reached up-to 3500 but in the fourth year the death rate dropped to 3000 again. Similarly the death ratio maintain the similar pattern in the next 4 years as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

You have failed to address a significant portion of the prompt. While you described the two graphs, you completely ignored the tables containing the survey results. Task 1 requires you to report on all provided data. Furthermore, your overview is missing; a high-scoring response must include a summary of the main trends across all visuals. You focused only on the graphs, leading to an incomplete response. To improve, ensure you synthesise information from all provided sources and include a clear overview paragraph that highlights the most significant trends or differences observed across the entire dataset.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by the omission of the survey data. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'Moving to the next chart', which help the reader follow the progression of the graphs. However, the lack of a concluding summary or an overview makes the structure feel incomplete. The referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the graph description and the missing survey data is non-existent. To improve, use a wider range of cohesive devices to link ideas more fluidly and ensure every part of the prompt is integrated into the logical structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. You use repetitive phrasing such as 'amount of' and 'recorded'. While you attempt to describe trends with words like 'gradual' and 'drastic', the overall range is limited. There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'death ratio' instead of 'fatality rate'. To improve, focus on using more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure you use terminology appropriate for statistical reporting, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'peaked'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'The two graphs represents' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'Bellow the graphs' (spelling error). You also have issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in proceeding years the amount of death reached up-to 3500'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring correct spelling of common words.
