The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line charts give the data on the number of over speeding fines caught by speed cameras and the number of fatalities by road accidents, over a period of eight years.

Overall, the challans by speed cameras increased gradually from the years they were installed. On the other hand, the number of road fatalities can be seen fluctuating through the time period.

The number of fines were at lowest (200,000) in the very first year when the cameras were introduced. These values increased slightly till 5th year. After that a substantial increase can be seen in values reaching at 160,000 by 8th year. On the other hand, the deaths by road accident were 3,000 first year, which can bee seen fluctuating around the same figure throughout the period.

The large number of people things that the cameras did not reduced the number of accidents on road and the main reason to introduce cameras is to raise revenue. While, approximately half of the population thinks that there are too many cameras.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graphs and tables, but there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state that fines reached 160,000 by the 8th year, whereas the graph shows a figure closer to 600,000. Additionally, the description of the survey results is somewhat vague, and you have not clearly integrated the data from the tables. While you identify the main trends, the failure to accurately transcribe the figures from the visual aids prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure you double-check the axes and values before writing, and aim to provide a more precise summary of the survey data provided in the tables.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for the graphs, and a final paragraph for the survey data. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'While', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the graph data and the survey data is abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within the paragraphs could be improved by grouping related data more effectively. Overall, the structure is sufficient to follow your argument, but the mechanical use of some linking words limits the score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary appropriate for a report, such as 'gradually', 'fluctuating', and 'substantial increase'. However, there are some word choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'over speeding fines' (should be 'speeding fines'), 'challans' (a regional term not suitable for an international exam), and 'large number of people things' (should be 'thinks'). These errors occasionally impede the precision of your report. To reach a higher band, focus on using more academic collocations and ensure that your terminology is standard and accurate for the context of a formal report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'The number of fines were at lowest' (should be 'was at its lowest'), 'did not reduced' (should be 'did not reduce'), and 'the main reason to introduce cameras is to raise revenue' (should be 'was to raise revenue' to maintain tense consistency). While these errors do not completely prevent communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and maintaining consistent tense usage across the report will help improve your accuracy.
