SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given graphs clarify the number of drivers in Britain who were caught speeding by speed cameras and number of people killed in road accidents over an eight-year period. In my opinion, it provide in formation about regarding speed cameras.

In the begining, the number of drivers were caught speeding increased throughout the period. Starting at approximately 200,000 in the first year , the figure rose gradually by around 600,000 by five years .Moreover , it increased more dramatically , reaching about 800,000 in year six and finally peaking at approximately 1.6 billion in the last year, In contrast, the number of road accidents fatalities flucuated slightly between roughly 3000 and 3400.

Explaning another supporting point , the majoritiy of people had a negative view of speed cameras. While 60% believe that speed cameras did not reduce road accidents, only 32% thought that they were effective. Furthermore, 56% of people considered there to be too speed of cameras . Similarly, significant majority of 71% believe that cameras were mainly installed to raise money.

I conclusion, the number of drivers caught rose significantly over eight- year period, the number of deaths become relatively stable . Therefore, most of the people believe that speed cameras were ineffective and were primarely used for generating revenue

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task, including the graphs and the survey tables. You have identified key trends, such as the increase in speeding fines and the stability of fatalities, and included relevant data from the survey. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, you state the peak was '1.6 billion', which is a misreading of the graph's scale (likely 1.6 million). Additionally, the inclusion of personal opinion ('In my opinion, it provide in formation...') is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires an objective description of the data. To improve, ensure you interpret the axes correctly and maintain a neutral, analytical tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion'. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions, such as 'Explaning another supporting point'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the logical progression between sentences could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus without needing explicit signposting phrases like 'Explaning another supporting point'.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'peaking', and 'generating revenue'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'too speed of cameras' and 'number of deaths become relatively stable'. Spelling errors, such as 'in formation', 'begining', 'majoritiy', and 'primarely', are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common academic words and pay closer attention to how words collocate in English, particularly when describing statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('the number of drivers were caught', 'it provide in formation') and tense usage. Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent spacing around commas and periods. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar structures prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound before attempting more complex forms.
