Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to adequately describe the data provided. While it mentions the graphs and tables, it does not provide a clear overview or report specific trends from the data. Instead of summarizing the figures (e.g., the increase in fines or the decline in fatalities), the response makes vague, unsupported claims such as 'million of people killed'. It lacks a clear analytical approach, failing to highlight key features or compare the data points effectively. The response reads more like a personal opinion piece than an academic report, which is a significant weakness for Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often misused, such as 'At last' to introduce a concluding point, which is inappropriate for this context. Referencing is unclear, and the link between the data and the commentary is weak. The paragraphing does not follow a logical structure that would allow the reader to follow the information easily. The overall flow is hampered by the lack of clear transitions between the description of the graphs and the interpretation of the survey results.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are frequent spelling errors, such as 'britian', 'spped', 'instalation', and 'challan'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends or data accurately; for instance, the student uses 'ratio' incorrectly when referring to the number of fines or accidents. The language is not academic in tone, and the lack of precision in word choice makes it difficult to convey the information clearly. The student relies on basic, often inaccurate, terminology throughout the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'This paragraph show', 'speed camera reduce'), article usage, and pluralization. Sentence structures are simple and often repetitive. Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent spacing around commas and periods. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures, and the errors are pervasive enough to cause difficulty for the reader. The lack of control over basic grammatical rules significantly lowers the score for this criterion.
