SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The graphs illustrate the number of drivers in Britain who were caught speeding by speed cameras and the number of people killed in road accidents over an eight-year period. The tables provide information about public opinions of speed cameras.
Overall, the number of drivers caught speeding increased considerably, from about **200,000 in the first year to 1.6 million in the eighth year**. In contrast, the number of road accident fatalities fluctuated around 3,000–3,500 and showed no significant overall decline.
The number of speeding offences rose gradually during the first five years, reaching approximately **700,000**. It then increased sharply, reaching around **1.1 million in year 7** and 1.6 million in the final year. Road deaths, however, were about **3,200** in year 1 and rose slightly to 3,400 in year 2. After that, the figure generally fluctuated between 3,000 and 3,300, finishing at roughly 3,300 deaths.
According to the survey, **60%** of people believed that speed cameras do not reduce accidents, while only 32% thought they do. Moreover, **71%** believed cameras were mainly installed to raise revenue. Finally, **56%** thought there were too many cameras on the roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all parts of the task, including the trends in the graphs and the key data from the survey tables. You have provided a clear overview and selected relevant data points to support your descriptions, such as the specific figures for speeding offences and the percentages regarding public opinion. The information is well-selected and accurately reflects the provided data. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between the two data sets is explored more deeply; for instance, explicitly noting the lack of correlation between the increase in fines and the stability of accident fatalities would strengthen the analytical aspect of your report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the visual data from the survey results. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Moreover', and 'Finally' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the information. The structure is coherent, and the transition between the description of the graphs and the analysis of the tables is smooth. The flow of information is natural, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, making the report easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'increased considerably', 'rose gradually', and 'increased sharply' show an ability to describe trends accurately. You also use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'speeding offences', 'road accident fatalities', and 'raise revenue' correctly. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. However, the word choices are consistently appropriate for the context of an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The graphs illustrate the number of drivers... and the number of people killed...' and 'According to the survey, 60% of people believed that...'. The punctuation is accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors. The control over tense usage is consistent, particularly when describing past trends. The sentences are generally error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication or cause any confusion for the reader.
