IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first line graph displays the figures for speed camera fines whereas the second line graph shows the the number of road accidents fatalities in Britain over the last eight years. The table interprets the views of general public about safety cameras from a survey result.

Overall, it is apparent from the graph that there was a dramatic increase in the number of speed related fines, while the number of road accident fatalities almost remained same throughout the entire period with only slight fluctuation. According to the survey, majority of people believe that the installation of speed cameras does not reduce the number of accidents on the road.

From the graph, it is clearly depicted that with the introduction of speed cameras, there was a significant increase in the number of fines, with just 2,00,000 in the first year, the figure climbed to 1,600,000 in the final year. Meanwhile, even with such a high number of over speeding fines the number of people killed in road accidents remained almost similar which is between 3,000 to 3,5000 people throughout an eight-year timescale.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response is incomplete, as it cuts off mid-sentence at the end. While you successfully identified the main trends in the graphs and the table, the failure to complete the description of the survey results significantly impacts the task achievement. You provided a clear overview and selected key features, such as the dramatic rise in fines and the relative stability of fatalities. However, because the final paragraph is unfinished, you have not fully addressed all parts of the task. To improve, ensure you allocate enough time to complete your analysis of all provided data points, including the survey findings, to provide a balanced and comprehensive report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall', 'According to', and 'Meanwhile', to link ideas. However, the abrupt ending disrupts the flow and coherence of the final section. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the lack of a conclusion or a fully developed final paragraph makes the overall structure feel unfinished. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphs are fully developed and that the transition between the graphs and the survey data is seamless and complete.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dramatic increase', 'slight fluctuation', and 'timescale'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'interprets the views' (which should be 'summarizes' or 'presents') and 'over speeding fines' (which is slightly awkward). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The first line graph displays... whereas the second line graph shows...'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the the number' (repetition) and 'majority of people' (should be 'the majority'). Additionally, there is a punctuation error in '2,00,000' (the standard format is 200,000) and '3,5000' (a typo). While these errors do not generally impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading your work to catch these minor slips and ensure consistent use of articles and correct numerical formatting.
