IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graphs illustrate the speed camera fines and the deaths caused by the road accidents, over a period of 8 years, while the tables present the opinion of public on speed cameras.
Overall, the number of fines increased abruptly, while the figures for fatalities caused by the road accidents remained stable with very little fluctuations. Therefore, most of the people think that speed cameras are only meant to raise revenue and they are useless in reducing the number of accidents on roads.
The number of speed cameras has increased substantially over the period of 8 years starting from 200,000 cameras in the first year and then 1,600,000 cameras in 8th year. In contrast, the number of fatalities caused by the road accidents were a little above 3000 in the 1st year and a little lower than 3500 in the 8th year with a very little fluctuations in between.
More than half of the people think that there are too many speed cameras on the road and they
don't help with reducing the number of accidents on road. Similarly, more than 70% of the public thinks that the speed cameras are installed just to raise revenue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by describing both the line graphs and the tables. In the overview, the candidate captures the main trends, noting that fines increased substantially while fatalities remained relatively stable, and synthesises the survey data effectively. Key data points are selected and reported, such as the starting and ending figures for cameras and fatalities (e.g., '200,000 cameras in the first year and then 1,600,000 cameras in 8th year'). While some specific figures in the source data might be misread as absolute numbers of cameras rather than fines, the overall interpretation and coverage of the stimulus material satisfy the requirements for a Band 7.0 by highlighting key features with appropriate data support.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The report demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into four distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview containing general trends and main takeaways, body paragraph one detailing the trends in the line graphs, and body paragraph two summarising the survey tables. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly', ensuring smooth transitions between ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate different datasets, contributing to a coherent overall arrangement that guides the reader naturally through the visual information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for this academic task, including terms like 'substantially', 'fatalities', 'fluctuations', and 'revenue'. There are occasional slight inaccuracies in collocation or phrasing, such as 'opinion of public' instead of 'public opinion' and 'reducing the number of accidents on road' instead of 'on the roads'. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with good precision, and less common lexical items are attempted with a generally appropriate academic tone, placing this performance solidly at Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The line graphs illustrate the speed camera fines and the deaths caused by the road accidents, over a period of 8 years, while the tables present the opinion of public on speed cameras.' Control over grammar and punctuation is generally sound, though a few minor errors occur, such as the omission of articles ('the opinion of public', 'on road') and slight verb agreement inconsistencies ('the number of fatalities... were'). These minor flaws do not impede communication, and the majority of sentences are clear and well-formed, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
