IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph shows the irresponsible speedy driving of british drivers captured by speed cameras installed on roads while the second line graph illustrates fatalities rate due to accidents on road. Both of these information are given over a period of eight years. Moreover, the tables show public perspective on speed cameras.

Overall, a drastic increase is seen in the number of individuals breaking speed limit. However, the death rate flactuates but remains somewhat steady.Furthermore, general public is not satisfied to the idea of speed cameras for road safety.

To begin with,in first graph, drivers fined in the first year were only 200,000 but this amount raised with unequal amount every year reaching about 1,500,000 by the 8th year. The mortality rate started with almost 3000 in 1st year and ups and downs were seen in the death rate in the final year almost 400 people fell prey to road accident.

Moving on to further details,60% of the public don't think speed cameras reduce accidents and 71% inhabitants believe the reason of their installment is to make revenue and 56% people think that speed camera are more in quantity than needed and a few proportion of people is also seen unsure about these questions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by describing the trends in the line graphs and summarizing the key information in the survey tables. An overview is provided, noting the main trends such as the drastic increase in speed camera fines and the fluctuating death rate, alongside public dissatisfaction. However, the response contains some inaccurate data interpretations. For instance, the student states that the mortality rate in the final year was 'almost 400 people', whereas the graph for road accident fatalities typically shows numbers in the thousands (starting at around 3,000 and dropping, but not to 400 based on standard interpretations of such datasets). Furthermore, some details regarding the tables are slightly imprecise. Nevertheless, the main features are successfully identified and outlined. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into four distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, an overall summary, and body paragraphs dedicated to the graphs and tables respectively, demonstrating a coherent overall arrangement. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'Moving on to further details'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical, and there are mechanical errors in punctuation and spacing, such as missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'road. Both', 'Moreover, the', 'However, the'). Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of proper spacing and occasional clunky transitions prevent the essay from achieving a higher band score. The logical progression is sufficient for a Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'mortality rate', 'perspective', and 'inhabitants'. However, there are notable lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as 'irresponsible speedy driving of british drivers' (awkward phrasing) and 'the death rate flactuates' (misspelling of fluctuates). Additionally, the phrase 'this amount raised with unequal amount every year' demonstrates a weak control of collocation and word choice ('amount' used instead of 'number', 'raised' instead of 'rose'). Spelling errors like 'flactuates' occur. Because the vocabulary is adequate to convey the general meaning despite these noticeable inaccuracies, a Band 5.5 or 6.0 is appropriate; given the attempt at functional descriptive language, a Band 6.0 is justified.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The line graph shows... while the second line graph illustrates...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization (e.g., 'british'), and article usage. There are significant punctuation and spacing omissions throughout the text, such as missing spaces after punctuation marks ('Furthermore, general public', 'To begin with,in first graph'). Sentence structures occasionally become awkward or faulty when attempting complexity, as seen in 'drivers fined in the first year were only 200,000 but this amount raised with unequal amount every year'. While communication is not severely impeded, the high frequency of minor grammatical and mechanical errors keeps the writing at a Band 5.5 level.
