IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The Line graphs provided here demonstrate the number of drivers who have been apprehended by speed cameras for overspeeding and the number of casualties caused by road traffic accidents in Britain over a course of 8 years of span. While the tables illustrate the survey findings on public opinion regarding speed cameras.

Overall, speed camera fines have taken exponential peak from 5th year onwards to 8th one after a steady upward climb while the casualties caused by road accidents have remained considerably static throughout. The public opinion on speed cameras seems to be against the speed cameras themselves.

In Britain, speed camera fines have seen a growth from 2 lacs to 5 lacs in the first 5 years, while exponential growth has been observed from 5 lacs to 17 lacs in the last 3 years. Contrastingly, road accident casualties haver emained varying between 3,000 and 3,500 on annual basis throughout the 8 years of time.

Shockingly, the excessive overspeeding fines have not restricted drivers from overspeeding itself. According to a survey, around 60% people disagree that speed cameras have the potential to reduce traffic accidents on roads, while 71% of them believe speed cameras are only generate revenue. Moreover, around 56% people believe the speed cameras are just too many on the roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the prompt by describing both the trends in the line graphs and the survey findings presented in the tables. An overview is successfully provided, capturing the main trends such as the steep rise in speed camera fines and the relatively static nature of road accident fatalities. Key data points are selected and quoted, such as the increase from 2 to 5 lakhs and then 17 lakhs, as well as the survey percentages. However, the student includes some personal commentary and evaluation, such as stating 'Shockingly, the excessive overspeeding fines have not restricted drivers', which departs slightly from a purely objective report. Despite this slight lack of total neutrality, all core requirements of Task 1 are addressed effectively, leading to a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The text is logically organized into four paragraphs, moving from an introduction to an overall summary, followed by a body paragraph detailing the graph trends, and a final paragraph discussing the survey results. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transitional markers like 'While', 'Overall', 'Contrastingly', and 'Moreover' helping to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different components of the prompt. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and the sentence fragments or abrupt shifts at the start of paragraphs slightly disrupt the flow. Progression is clear overall, but minor structural awkwardnesses prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing graphical data and survey results, using terms such as 'apprehended', 'exponential peak', 'considerably static', and 'revenue'. There are, however, some lexical and collocation issues, such as the use of 'lac' (a region-specific term which is generally less appropriate in international English examinations like IELTS compared to 'hundred thousand' or numeric figures like '0.5 million'), the spelling error 'haver emained', and the awkward phrase 'are only generate revenue'. While less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, these inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing mean the vocabulary is somewhat restricted in its precision and naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinate clauses introduced by 'While' and 'Although'. There are several grammatical errors throughout the response, including verb-form slips ('haver emained'), missing prepositions or articles ('around 60% people'), and tense or voice issues ('speed cameras are only generate revenue' and 'speed cameras are just too many'). Although these errors are noticeable and detract from precision, they do not severely impede overall communication. The punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of non-systematic grammatical slips keeps the performance within the Band 6 descriptor range.
