SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graphs illustrate the number of drivers in Britain who were caught speeding by speed cameras and the number of people who died in road accidents over an eight-year period following the introduction of speed cameras. The tables provide information about people’s opinions of speed cameras.

Overall, the number of drivers caught speeding increased considerably during the period, while the number of road accident fatalities generally decreased. In addition, most people supported the use of speed cameras, although opinions varied among different groups.

At the beginning of the period, the number of drivers caught speeding was relatively low. However, it increased gradually over the following years and reached its highest level towards the end of the period. By contrast, the number of people killed in road accidents showed an overall downward trend. Although there were some fluctuations, fatalities were considerably lower at the end of the period than at the beginning.

The survey results show that support for speed cameras was generally high. A large proportion of people believed that speed cameras were useful for reducing speeding and improving road safety. However, some respondents were concerned that cameras were mainly used to generate fines rather than to prevent accidents. Overall, the majority of people had a positive attitude towards speed cameras despite some concerns about their purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by describing the overall trends in the graphs regarding speed camera fines and road fatalities, and summarizing the key results from the survey tables. In the introduction, the writer accurately paraphrases the prompt. An overview is provided, highlighting the main trends such as the increase in speeding drivers, the decrease in accident fatalities, and overall public support. The body paragraphs correctly contrast the upward trend of speed camera fines with the downward trend of road fatalities, and summarize the primary survey opinions. While specific data points or precise figures from the visual prompts are not cited, the general trends are accurately depicted, earning a solid Band 7.0 for addressing all parts of the task with a clear overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The report exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically by topic: the introduction, an overall summary paragraph, a body paragraph detailing the trends from the graphs, and a final body paragraph discussing the survey results. Cohesive devices are used appropriately and effectively to link ideas, such as "Overall," "In addition," "However," and "By contrast." Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in the structure of an Academic Task 1 report. Referencing is clear and tracking between ideas is smooth, satisfying the criteria for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and demonstrates adequate flexibility and precision. The writer employs appropriate academic vocabulary suitable for a report describing visual data, such as "illustrate," "considerable," "fluctuations," "downward trend," and "proportion." While there is an attempt to use less common items with some awareness of style, the vocabulary tends to be somewhat standard rather than sophisticated (e.g., repeating words like "period" and "number"). However, spelling and word choice are accurate, and communication is never impeded, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, warranting a 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response features a good variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., "Although there were some fluctuations, fatalities were considerably lower..."). The writer demonstrates good control of grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences. Tenses are handled appropriately for past and ongoing general trends. There are no noticeable grammatical errors that cause difficulty for the reader or impede communication. The control over complex grammatical forms combined with a low error frequency justifies a band score of 7.5.
