SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graphs show the number of speeding offenders caught by cameras on Britain's roads and the number of deaths in road accidents over eight years after the cameras were introduced. The table provides the results of a survey about public opinions on speed cameras.
Overall, speeding offences rose sharply throughout the period, while road deaths showed only small fluctuations. Most people also believed that speed cameras were mainly used to generate income.
At the start, around 200,000 drivers were caught speeding, and this figure increased steadily to about 800,000 in year five. It then rose sharply and reached nearly 1.6 million by the final year. In contrast, road deaths began at just over 3,000, moved up and down slightly, and ended at roughly 3,500.
The survey showed that 60% of people felt speed cameras did not reduce accidents, while 32% believed they did. Most respondents (71%) thought the main purpose of installing cameras was to increase revenue, whereas only 26% said they were meant to improve safety. Regarding the number of cameras, 58% felt there were too many, 19% said too few, 17% believed the number was appropriate, and 8% were unsure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an accurate overview of the visual data. The trends in both graphs are clearly described, noting the sharp rise in speeding fines and the minor fluctuations in road accident fatalities. Furthermore, the key data points from the tables regarding public opinion are effectively integrated and summarised. The figures cited match the source data closely, such as noting that 28% to 60% of people felt speed cameras did not reduce accidents and that 71% thought the main purpose was to raise revenue. The response satisfies the requirements of Task 1 comprehensively and accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The report is exceptionally well-structured and easy to follow. Information is logically sequenced, beginning with a clear introductory paraphrase, followed by an overarching summary statement, a detailed paragraph on the line graphs, and a final paragraph dedicated to the survey results. Cohesive devices are used naturally and unobtrusively, such as 'Overall', 'At the start', 'In contrast', and 'Regarding the number of cameras'. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, ensuring each distinct aspect of the prompt has its own logical space.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is appropriate and accurate for an academic report. The student employs a good range of vocabulary to describe data trends and survey findings, using terms such as 'fluctuations', 'increased steadily', 'rose sharply', and 'respondents'. While most phrasing is standard rather than exceptionally sophisticated, word choice and collocation are handled securely with no notable inaccuracies that impede communication. The terminology precisely reflects the contents of the graphs and tables.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a strong command of grammatical structures. A good mix of simple and complex sentences is used effectively throughout the text, including subordinate clauses ('while road deaths showed only small fluctuations', 'whereas only 26% said they were meant to improve safety'). The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and control over tense usage (past simple for describing the trend over the eight-year period) is consistent and accurate. Punctuation is also well managed.
