IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given two graphical representations illustrates the driver caught when they were over speeding on speed cameras and the number of death rates caused by road mishaps during the eight years.

The number of speed cameras fines has been increased rapidly from first to last year while the number of deaths was almost same on the roads due to the accidents.

In the year 1, the number of penalties to the drivers due to road camera were 2 lac which raised to 1 lac 60 thousand value at the last year of analysis. The road safety measures are ensured by the over speeding detecting cameras. In year 2, 4 lac number cameras increases until there is a sharp increase from year 6, 6 lac to year 7 at 7 lac.

As compare to this, the number of fatalities varies slightly during the whole wight year. For instance, its value at year 1 was 3000 then at year 2 and 3 were 3400. Then it dropped to 3000 again in year 4 and raised agian in year 6 to 3300 and reached to 3400 in year 7 and ultimately to 3500 in year 8.

So, overall, the number of people dies during road accidents remained almost same while the number of fines due to road cameras has increased in subsequent years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the visual data by describing the main trends in speed camera fines and fatalities over the eight-year period. However, the report suffers from significant omissions, completely failing to mention or incorporate any data from the provided survey tables regarding people's opinions on speed cameras. Furthermore, several figures and numbers stated in the text are inaccurate or confusingly expressed, such as stating '2 lac which raised to 1 lac 60 thousand' (which contradicts the data of 1.6 million) and stating that fatalities varied between 3000 and 3500. While an overview is attempted at the end, the task is only partially covered due to the missing survey data and numerical inaccuracies. This places the response in Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs for the trends, and a concluding sentence. However, the overall progression is disjointed due to abrupt shifts between sentences and poorly managed cohesive devices. For instance, transitional phrases like 'As compare to this' are awkwardly constructed. Referencing is frequently unclear, and sentences often lack smooth logical links, making the flow somewhat mechanical and difficult to follow in places. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is weak. These issues align with Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and phrasing. Examples include 'death rates', 'road mishaps', 'speed cameras fines', and Indian-numbering-system terminology like '2 lac'. There are also lexical inaccuracies, such as using 'cameras' when referring to the number of fines or units incorrectly. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, the frequent errors and restricted range occasionally impede clear communication. This demonstrates performance consistent with Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent errors in basic grammar, tense usage, and article placement. Examples of faulty structures include 'The given two graphical representations illustrates', 'driver caught when they were over speeding', and 'the number of people dies'. Attempted complex sentences frequently result in grammatical breakdown and awkward phrasing. Punctuation and word forms are also problematic throughout the text. These persistent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
