SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two line graphs show the number Britain's drivers who have been caught driving too fast, and the number of individuals killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. Moreover, the tables illustrate the outcome of a survey on people's views on speed cameras.
Overall, the numbers of speed camera fines rose consistently from year 1 to year 8, whereas the figures to road accident fatalities fluctuated in the middle years. On the other hand, most people thought that speed cameras did not help in reducing accidents on the roads, meanwhile, people's main reason for the installation of speed cameras was to raise revenue. Furthermore, almost half of individuals thought bout the speed cameras on the roads.
The figures of speed camera fines increased dramatically from 200,000 in year one to 1,600,000 in year eight. It rose 1,400,000 throughout the eight- year period. On the other hand, the number of road accidents fatalities fluctuated before rising again in the last year. From around 3,100 in year one, it rose in year two to estimated 3, 300. Then it noticeably decreased in year 4 accumulated to 3,000. It climbed gradually from year 6 at 3,000, year 7 at 3,100 to 3,300 in year 8 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate addresses all parts of the visual data, providing a description of both line graphs and the three survey tables. An overview is successfully presented in the second paragraph, outlining the main trends and survey results. Key features are selected and reported, such as the rise in fines and the fluctuations in fatalities, along with the main survey findings. However, there are minor misinterpretations of the data, such as claiming that 'whereas 32% said no' regarding whether cameras reduce accidents, when the text actually indicates 32% said 'yes' and 60% said 'no'. Furthermore, the phrasing 'almost half of individuals thought bout the speed cameras' in the overview is vague and not fully supported by the specific data points. Despite these minor lapses, all requirements of the task are addressed, earning a solid band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The report displays a clear overall progression, with information logically divided into an introduction, an overview, body paragraph one covering the line graphs, and body paragraph two detailing the survey data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct visual prompts. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally become mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen in the transition 'Furthermore, people thought about the number of speed cameras on the roads, 56% of people voted too many...', which lacks smooth syntactic integration. Overall, the logical structure is clear throughout, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 report, successfully utilizing terms such as 'consistently', 'fluctuated', 'dramatically', and 'installation'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, although there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the figures to road accident fatalities' (instead of 'figures for') and 'thought bout' (typographical/lexical error for 'thought about'). Additionally, referencing survey responses sometimes leads to awkward phrasing like 'the survey resulted to people thought that'. The range is sufficient for the task, but errors in collocation and lexical precision prevent a higher score, placing this safely in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as 'the number Britain's drivers' (missing preposition), 'accumulated to 3,000' (inaccurate participle usage), and 'the survey resulted to people thought that' (ungrammatical clause structure). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but minor structural slips persist. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. The control of grammar aligns with the Band 6 descriptors.
