Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The candidate has attempted to cover all parts of the visual data, including both the line graphs and the survey tables. An overview is provided, noting the upward trend in fines and the fluctuating trend in fatalities, alongside public opinions. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that road fatalities were '3000 deaths in year 1 and around 3300 in year 8', whereas the chart shows around 3,150 rising to 3,350. Furthermore, data for the tables are summarised rather loosely without precise referencing to percentages, and the wording 'percentage of speed camera fines' in the introduction misinterprets the graph (which shows absolute numbers, not percentages). Nevertheless, the response clearly presents the main trends and features, satisfying the basic requirements for this band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is arranged into a coherent overall structure, starting with an introductory sentence followed by an overview, body details for the graphs, and a final section covering the survey results. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped; the entire text is essentially grouped into a single block or poorly separated paragraphs with missing line breaks. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or awkwardly, such as 'Regarding public, thoughts' and 'at last 56%'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and punctuation errors (such as missing commas and periods) disrupt the logical flow between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'escalated rapidly' and 'upward trend'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout, such as 'record accidents fatalities' (instead of road accident fatalities), 'carries a slight up and down trend', and 'public, thoughts'. Spelling and word-form errors occur, such as 'thoughts' instead of 'thought' or 'think'. The range is sufficient to convey the main message, but frequent inaccuracies limit the score to a Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, missing verbs, and punctuation omissions throughout the text. For example, 'the number of drivers caught 200000 in year 1 and goes around 500000' lacks necessary auxiliary verbs and prepositions. Similarly, 'comparing 32% said yes' and '60% thoughts speed cameras do not reduce' display major structural and tense errors. While simple sentences are generally understandable, attempts at more complex structures often result in faulty syntax that causes some difficulty for the reader.
