SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two line graphs illustrate the number of fines imposed by speed cameras the number of deaths from road accidents over an eight year period.

Overall, there was a dramatic increase in the number od speed camera fines, whereas road accident fetalities remained largely stable. Despite the eight fold rise in fine, there was no significant fall in the number of road deaths.

In the first year, the numbers of fine stood at approximately 200,000.Over the next four years, this figure grew steadily to about 550,000 in year 5. Subsequently, the increase became much more rapid, with fines reach750,000 in year 6 about 1.15 million in year 7, and peaking at around 1.6 million in the final year.

In contrast, the number of road accident deaths showed little change.Starting at around 3,100 in year 1, fatalities rose slightly to the peak of about 3,300 in year 2 and 3.The figure then fell to just over 3,000 in year 4 and fucteated between 3,000 and 3,300 for the remainder of the period, finishing at approximately 3,300 in year 8.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student successfully addresses the main task requirements by describing the two line graphs showing speed camera fines and road accident fatalities over an eight-year period. However, a noticeable limitation is the complete omission of the three survey tables, which are explicitly part of the prompt. Task Achievement requires covering all parts of the visual data. The overview effectively highlights the main trends, noting the dramatic rise in fines and the stability of fatalities. Data points are generally quoted accurately, such as the starting point of around 200,000 and the final peak of 1.6 million. Because a major portion of the visual input (the survey tables) was ignored, the response cannot achieve a band score above 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The report has a clear overall progression, starting with an introductory sentence that paraphrases the prompt, followed by an overview paragraph and body paragraphs detailing each line graph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body content. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, with phrases like 'Overall,' 'In the first year,' and 'In contrast' functioning effectively. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally hindered by minor missing words and typographical errors, such as 'the number of fines imposed by speed cameras the number of deaths' lacking a conjunction. Overall, the logical structure is coherent enough to merit a band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 report, utilizing appropriate terms such as 'dramatic increase,' 'remained largely stable,' 'grew steadily,' and 'peaking at.' Less common lexical items are attempted, showing some awareness of collocation. However, there are a few spelling and typographical errors, including 'od' instead of 'of,' 'fetalities' instead of 'fatalities,' and 'fucteated' instead of 'fluctuated.' Despite these slips, communication is never impeded, and the range of vocabulary successfully conveys the trends shown in the line graphs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. Examples include 'Despite the eight fold rise in fine, there was no significant fall...' which shows good use of concessive structures. However, there are several grammatical errors and omissions, such as missing prepositions or articles ('the numbers of fine stood,' 'fines reach750,000') and pluralisation errors ('fine' instead of 'fines'). Punctuation is occasionally faulty with missing spaces after commas. While these errors occur with some frequency, the majority of sentences are understandable and do not impede the reader's overall comprehension.
