IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two line graphs and survey reports compare the data about road accidents, speed cameras and people opinion towards the cameras over 8 years period.

Overall, the data shows that there was a dramatic increase in fines in several years, yet it does not affected the number of road accident fatilities as that number remained steady.Because of that many people showed negative opinion towards cameras in survey.

Regarding speed cameras, the fine was 200,000 in year 1 and reached 600,000 in year 5,after that there was a drastice change in the amount as it increased to 1.6 million in year 8..

In contrast, there was no effect of fine on number of deaths caused by the accidents. There were around 3100 deathes was in first year and very slight fluctuations came over the years unlike fines.

The survey results explain this contradiction, because 60% people thought that these cameras have no effect on accidents at all and 71% opinion is that the reason of their installation is to raise the revenue of country, while 36% think there are too many cameras.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task by addressing both the visual data for speed camera fines and road accident fatalities, as well as the survey results regarding public opinion. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the key trend that despite rising fines, fatalities remained relatively stable, which influenced negative public perceptions. Key data points are cited correctly, such as the initial and final figures for fines (200,000 rising to 1.6 million) and the survey percentages (e.g., 60% and 71%). However, there is a minor error in data interpretation in the final paragraph where the student mentions 36% thinking there are too many cameras, whereas the chart shows 56%. Overall, the task is adequately fulfilled, warranting a band score of 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement and logical progression, divided appropriately into an introduction, overview, body paragraphs detailing the charts, and a final paragraph explaining the survey results. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different components of the prompt. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'Regarding speed cameras', 'In contrast', and 'The survey results explain this contradiction'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally be a bit mechanical or repetitive, and some connective errors occur (e.g., 'yet it does not affected'). Progression is clear, but transitions between ideas could be smoother. This level aligns with a band score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'dramatic increase', 'steady', 'fluctuations', and 'contradiction'. However, there are noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'fatilities' instead of fatalities, 'drastice' instead of drastic, and awkward phrasing like 'people opinion towards the cameras'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, and spelling errors occasionally surface. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the main points clearly, but the presence of spelling and collocation errors limits the score to 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure (e.g., 'Although there was a dramatic increase...'). However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text. Examples include 'it does not affected' (tense/form error), 'There were around 3100 deathes was in first year' (unnecessary 'was'), and missing articles or spacing errors (e.g., '8 years period', 'speed cameras, the fine'). While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the writer from achieving a higher band. The grammar corresponds to a band score of 5.5.
