IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graphs illustrate information about the number of drivers in Britain who got speeding fines through the detection of speed cameras, and the number of road accident fatalities, over an eight-year period since the installation of these gadgets. On the other hand, the tabels present the peoples' opinions about the effectiveness of speed cameras.

Overall, the data shows that fines have increased significantly in number, while the number of accidents has had some slight fluctuations during the period of time. The results from the survey vary a lot, with participents generally suggesting that speed cameras do not bring positive results in the road.

Initially, the number of fines was 200,000, and after four years the digits increased steadily to almost 600,000. After this year the numbers rose significantly to around 1,600,000. Road accidents experienced some fluctuations, staying in the range between 3,000 and 3,500.

More than half of the participants in the survey thought that speed cameras are not effective in reducing the road fatalities, while the other part had the opposite opinion (32%) and a small part didn't know (8%). A little more than 70% thought that speed cameras were installed to raise revenue, whereas the other part thought that these gadgets improved rad safety. Lastly, more than half agreed that there are too many cameras on road, 19% said there are too little, and almost 20% said there exist a right amount of them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, incorporating data from both the line graphs and the tables. An overview is provided, noting the key upward trend in fines, the fluctuations in fatalities, and the general survey sentiments. Key data points are selected and cited correctly, such as the starting figure of 200,000 fines and the peak around 1,600,000. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data interpretation in the body paragraphs; for example, the text states that 'the number of fines was 200,000, and after four years the digits increased steadily to almost 600,000', whereas the graph shows 500,000 in year 4 and nearly 600,000 (580,000) in year 5. Furthermore, the description of road fatalities missing the exact trajectory in places prevents this from reaching a higher band. Overall, task achievement is solid and covers all visual components.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organized into four distinct paragraphs, following a logical progression from introduction to overview, graph details, and survey results. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Initially', and 'Lastly', although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('after this year', 'the other part'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the graphic data from the tabular survey results. Referencing is generally clear, though expressions like 'the other part' could be more precisely linked to specific survey options. The text maintains clear logical organization throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task, utilizing terms such as 'illustrate', 'fluctuations', 'significantly', and 'revenue'. There are, however, some lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'tabels' (spelling error), 'participents' (spelling error), 'positive results in the road' (unnatural preposition, should be 'on the road'), 'rad safety' (typographical error for 'road safety'), and 'too little' (instead of 'too few' when referring to countable nouns like cameras). Less common items are attempted with mixed success, placing this firmly in the Band 6 territory.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is used throughout the response, such as relative clauses ('drivers in Britain who got speeding fines') and subordinate clauses ('More than half of the participants... thought that...'). Grammatical control is generally good, and errors do not impede communication. Minor slips include the spelling of 'tabels' and 'participents' (though spelling falls under lexical resource, it affects overall polish), as well as a slight agreement error in the final sentence ('there exist a right amount of them', where 'exists' would be grammatically correct). The majority of simple structures are error-free, and complex attempts demonstrate reasonable control.
