Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by attempting to describe the line graphs and the survey tables. However, the information is only partially covered, and the data is often inaccurately reported. For instance, the fine figures and the description of the road accident fatalities contain confusion over the actual data trends. Furthermore, the overview is weak, attempting to list specific details rather than summarising the overarching trends. To move to a higher band, the response needs to select and accurately report the key trends from the charts, such as the sharp rise in speed camera fines contrasted with the relatively stable number of fatalities, rather than relying on fragmented and vague numerical descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation to the writing, with an introductory sentence and subsequent paragraphs attempting to deal with different visual elements. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting paragraphs with 'Addition' or 'According to people's opinions survey'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and poor sentence connections. To improve cohesion, the writer should use clearer referencing words, ensure a logical progression of ideas from the overview into detailed body paragraphs, and apply cohesive markers more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'installation', 'revenue', and 'proportions', but struggles with appropriate word choices and collocations, seen in phrases like 'rush driving' instead of speeding or 'gradully rosed'. There are also issues with word forms, such as 'survey on people's opinions survey'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use precise terms related to statistical reporting, and ensure correct word forms and spellings throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving articles, plurals, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'speed cameras introduced', 'This were major changed comes', and 'people's opinion the amount'. These frequent errors place a heavy burden on the reader and sometimes impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to increase the variety of sentence structures, improve control over basic grammatical agreements, and ensure that tense usage remains consistent and accurate when describing graphical data.
