SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph provides data on the number of speed camera fines of British drivers and the number of road accident fatalities, over an eight-year period, while the tables below show citizen's opinions on speed cameras. Overall, the speed camera fines increased substantially, while the number of road accident fatalities remained between 3000 and 35000. A significant number of people were of the opinion that speed cameras could reduce accidents and that these cameras are for government benefit.

The data reveals that the speed camera fines rose steadily for the first five years from 200,000 in year one to 600,000 in year five, before they hiked to 1,600,000 in year eight, whereas the number of fatalities fluctuated slightly between 3000 and 35000 in the period.

Consequently, the results of the survey also showed dissatisfaction of citizens regarding speed cameras, with 60% of people saying that speed cameras did not reduce road accidents, compared to 32% who said that speed cameras reduced road accidents, while only 26% of citizens thought that the purpose of speed cameras were to improve road safety. Regarding the number of speed cameras about 56% thought there were too many cameras, while only 19% said there were very few cameras and 17% thought the number is appropriate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the line graph data and the survey tables. An appropriate and clear overview is provided right at the beginning, summarizing the main trends and findings. The student covers key features well, such as the substantial rise in speed camera fines alongside the relatively stable fatality numbers, as well as highlighting key survey results regarding public opinion. Ideas are generally well selected and extended, though the reference to fatalities remaining between 3,000 and 35,000 contains a minor numerical typo (35,000 instead of 3,500). Despite this slight slip, the overall coverage meets the requirements of a solid performance by presenting clear comparisons and supporting details from the provided visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction setting the context and overview, a second paragraph detailing the graph trends, and a final paragraph synthesizing the survey findings. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'whereas' and 'compared to', though referencing is at times slightly mechanical. To reach the highest band, the transitions between the graph data and the survey statistics could be made even smoother and more integrated, ensuring that paragraph-level cohesion feels entirely natural and unobtrusive rather than formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student exhibits a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully using terms such as 'substantially', 'fluctuated', and 'satisfaction'. There is an awareness of less common lexical items appropriate for an academic report. However, there are occasional minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'hiked' instead of 'surged' or 'jumped', and a slight slip in word form with 'citizen's opinions' (should be plural possessive 'citizens' opinions'). These minor errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary remains adequate to convey precise trends and survey percentages.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively (e.g., 'while the tables below show citizen's opinions on speed cameras' and 'compared to 32% who said that speed cameras reduced road accidents'). There are frequent error-free sentences, showing good overall control of grammar and punctuation. A few minor errors persist, such as subject-verb agreement or article usage in isolated spots (e.g., 'the purpose of speed cameras were' instead of 'was'). Overall, sentence structures are varied and sophisticated enough to maintain smooth readability throughout.
