IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graphs are illustrating the drivers caught over speeding by speed cameras in past eight year and number of fatalities recorded in road accidents during same span of time. Overall a comparison of different opinions is showen in percentage if camers are actually benefical in reduction of deaths and imporving road safety

On one side when we observe line graph of speed camera fines, numbers in first 4 years are steady, Afterwards, next 4 years show a steep incline in the numbers. While observing number of death rate in other graph shows the line stayed steady with slight movement, lowest being 3000 to slightly below 3500 people per anum.

A survey shows that only 32% perople consider speed cameras are hlepfull, while 60% beleive its did not do any good. When the resons are being considered for instalation, majority beleived its to raise revenue, only 26% said it is associated with safety. More than half of people also said the number of cameras are much more than required

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response partially addresses the task by attempting to describe both the line graphs and the survey data, providing an overview in the opening sentence. However, the development of ideas is limited and mechanical. While the writer notes general trends, such as the steady numbers in the first four years followed by a steep incline for fines, the reporting of specific data points contains inaccuracies or is vague, such as describing the death rate as 'lowest being 3000 to slightly below 3500 people per anum'. Furthermore, the summary of the survey tables touches upon the main points like the 32% approval and the perception of revenue raising, but lacks a fully cohesive integration with the graphical data. To achieve a higher band, the response needs to extend and support its ideas with more accurate data selection and clearer comparisons between the visual elements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the response, with an introductory attempt, a body paragraph dedicated to the graphs, and a final paragraph touching on the survey results. However, there is no clear overall progression across the text, and the paragraphing is somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal, basic, and occasionally inaccurate, such as 'On one side when we observe' and 'While observing number of death rate in other graph shows', which makes the transitions between ideas mechanical. Referencing and logical sequencing need improvement to ensure the relationships between the trends in the line graphs and the survey data are clearly marked. To progress, the writer should employ a wider range of cohesive devices naturally and structure the report into more distinct, logically sequenced paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common terms like 'incline', 'revenue', and 'associated', but these are accompanied by frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'over speeding', 'showen', 'camers', 'benefical', 'imporving', 'hlepfull', 'beleive', 'did not do any good', 'resons', and 'instalation'. These errors and awkward collocations occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical range beyond basic descriptors, use word forms accurately (e.g., 'helpful' instead of 'hlepfull', 'reasons' instead of 'resons'), and demonstrate greater precision and correct spelling when discussing statistical trends and public opinions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing articles, and faulty prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'in past eight year' instead of 'over the past eight years', 'number of death rate', and 'the number of cameras are much more' where subject-verb agreement is weak ('number ... is'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To move up, the student must increase their repertoire of complex structures and exercise much better control over basic grammatical rules, such as plurals, articles, and verb-subject agreement.
