The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two graphs illustrate the number of drivers in Britain who were caught by spead cameras installed on roads, as they were driving too fast and number of people who were killed in road accidents over an eight-year period after the introduction of speed cameras. Moreover, the table shows people's opinions on speed cameras collected through a survey.

Overall, amount of speed camera fines have dramatically increased throughout the period especially in the later years. Number of fatal road accidents were quite fluctuating whereas the survey demonstrated that people dont actually believe that speed cameras reduce the amount of accidents and is just a source to raise revenue.

In the first year of introduction of the speed cameras, the fines were significantly less at 200,000 than what of later years. The amount of fines gradually rose from 200,000 to approximately 550,000 in the 5th year, however, the figures sharply increased since then and reached 1,600,000 till the end of the 8th year.

The survey culminates in majority of people(60%) agreeing that cameras did not help in reducing the number of deaths due to accidents. The figures for the seconf graph are slightly fluctuating but are over 3000 and less than 3500 at all times. 71% pPeople were also convinced that the cameras were setup to raise revenue and were in excessive amount.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the graphs and the survey data. Key features are selected and reported, such as the dramatic rise in speed camera fines from 200,000 to 1,600,000, and the relatively stable trend in fatalities. However, some areas are developed more fully than others; for instance, the integration of the survey tables is somewhat brief and placed towards the end without fully synthesizing how public opinion relates to the visual trends. Furthermore, there is a minor numerical inaccuracy when stating that the fines reached approximately 550,000 in the fifth year, whereas the data indicates around 580,000. To reach a higher band, the response would need to ensure all data points are cited with greater precision and provide a more fully developed, cohesive analysis that intertwines the charts and survey results more fluidly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organization, dividing the introduction, overview, line graph details, and survey results into distinct paragraphs. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like "Moreover" and "The survey culminates in" feel slightly awkward or forced, and referencing could be smoother, such as when abruptly introducing "the seconf graph" in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression between the distinct datasets (the time-series charts versus the static survey tables) lacks seamless transitions. To improve, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that sentences flow logically from one idea to the next without abrupt shifts in topic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating key trends using terms like "dramatically increased," "fluctuating," and "gradually rose." The writer also attempts some less common lexical items such as "culminates" and "revenue." However, there are notable word choice, spelling, and word form errors throughout the text, including the spelling error "spead" instead of "speed", "dont" instead of "don't", "seconf" instead of "second", and awkward phrasing like "was just a source to raise revenue" and "were in excessive amount." These minor slips and inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at this band level. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their range of less common vocabulary and eliminate spelling and collocation errors through careful proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures such as "drivers in Britain who were caught..." and "whereas the survey demonstrated that..." There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation. Missing articles occur in phrases like "and number of people" and "is just a source," and there are minor prepositional or structural awkwardness such as "what of later years" and "71% pPeople were also convinced." Punctuation errors are also present, notably missing commas in lists or before introductory clauses. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning. To move up, the writer must demonstrate greater control over complex structures, ensure accurate article usage, and reduce recurring grammatical slips.
