Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response partially addresses the task by covering both the graphs and the survey tables, including a rudimentary overview and some key data points like the initial figure of 200,000 fines. However, some parts of the prompt are treated superficially or with unclear development, such as the vague summaries of the survey results where percentages from the tables were omitted entirely. The student relies on general statements like 'most of the people claim' rather than incorporating the specific data provided in the survey tables (such as 71% believing the main reason is to raise revenue). Furthermore, a small portion of the text is copied directly from the prompt. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precise data integration and under-developed reporting of the survey findings keep the response at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organisation by attempting to separate the introduction, an overview paragraph, and the body details. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by poor paragraphing and a lack of clear structural links. Cohesive devices are either missing or used inadequately, such as starting sentences with weak connectors like 'moreover' and 'in addition' without effective integration into the surrounding text. Referencing is also problematic, as pronouns and transitional phrases often fail to connect ideas smoothly. While the text is broken into separate blocks of writing, the mechanical transitions and lack of cohesive control prevent the information from progressing logically from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for describing trends, featuring repetitive phrasing such as 'number of people', 'data', and 'speed cameras'. There are numerous lexical errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the response, including 'bean' instead of 'been', 'openion' instead of 'opinion', 'doest' instead of 'does not', 'spped' instead of 'speed', and 'fluction' instead of 'fluctuation'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary result in awkward phrasing, such as 'with the assist of survey' or 'a clear spike arise eventho after 5 years it just boomed'. These noticeable errors and spelling mistakes occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammar is characterised by a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside frequent, faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'driver who have bean caught', 'over a eight year period', and 'people thinks government implemented this camera'. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences and missing capitalization at the start of sentences like 'overall' and 'speed camera fines'. These frequent errors persist across the entire text and frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader in parsing the intended meaning.
