SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pictorial evidences beneath display the eight-year numerical statistics of the over speeding drivers captures by speed montoring cameras on roads, and the people died beacuse of on-road mishaps. It also displays the outcomes of survey on speed cameras.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the overall trends in speed camera fines and road fatalities, and summarising the key survey results. An appropriate overview is provided, noting the upward trend in fines, the fluctuations in fatalities, and the general public negativity. However, some aspects are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion of the survey data is somewhat brief and misses deeper comparisons. While the main features are covered, ideas relating to the specific details of the second chart could be extended further. Overall, the response meets the requirements for a partial yet relevant treatment of visual data, though certain data points lack sufficient depth to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The writing presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the report into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the trends and survey results. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the visual data. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with transitional phrases like "While, the number of deaths had fluctuated" used incorrectly or awkwardly at the start of sentences. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally falters due to abrupt shifts in focus. To improve further, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between ideas and use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally rather than relying on basic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the main points of the task, though the range is limited and contains noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation. Examples of inaccuracies include "pictorial evidences" instead of visual data or graphs, "over speeding" written as two words, "captures" instead of captured, "montoring" (spelling error), and "beacuse" (spelling error). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as "financial penalties" and "fluctuated," but these are accompanied by awkward collocations or morphological mistakes like "positve." These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the use of subordinate clauses introduced by "while" and "whereas." However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include tense and aspect issues such as "had been increased gradually" (incorrect passive/perfect construction), subject-verb agreement errors like "the population thinks" (though acceptable in some contexts, used inconsistently), missing articles, and awkward prepositional usage such as "on speed cameras" versus "over speed violations." Punctuation errors are also present, such as misplaced commas separating dependent clauses incorrectly. These errors occur frequently enough to catch the reader's attention, though they rarely obscure the overall meaning.
