Student answer (Band 4.5)

These graphs elaborate the drivers who have been caught driving too fast by speedy cameras and the number of casulaties in road accidents over an eight years period after the installation of cameras. The tables illustrate the outcomes of a survey on people opinions on speed cameras. First graph reveals the speed camers fines during these eight years to drivers. During the early five years the number of fines increased gradually with the gap of two lac every year. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response only partially addresses the prompt. While the writer attempts to describe the graphs showing speed camera fines and fatalities, the interpretation of the data is severely flawed and inaccurate. For instance, the data points for fatalities and fines are heavily misread and miscalculated, such as claiming the highest fatalities were three thousand to eight thousand, which does not reflect the actual figures provided in the visual data. Furthermore, the response completely ignores the three tables regarding public opinion, which is a major part of the visual prompt. The reporting lacks a clear overview and fails to adequately select and report key features, restricting the response to a low band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text presents some organisation with basic sequencing devices like 'First graph', 'During the early five years', and 'Similarly', but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure. Paragraphing is poorly handled, as the entire response is clumped together into a single block of text rather than being divided into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes inaccurate, and referencing becomes unclear when transitioning between the different charts, causing the flow of information to feel disjointed and mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'installation', 'gradually', and 'massive boost', but these are accompanied by frequent spelling and word-choice errors, including 'casulaties' instead of casualties, 'speedy cameras' instead of speed cameras, and 'steadly' instead of steadily. Additionally, the use of unusual number translations like 'two lac' and 'one crore' is inappropriate for an international academic context. These noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and awkwardly constructed sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and incorrect article usage, such as 'over an eight years period' instead of an eight-year period, 'in the six years' instead of in the sixth year, and 'on;ythree thousand'. Complex sentence forms are rarely attempted, and when structures become more intricate, they are frequently faulty and cause strain and difficulty for the reader to follow the intended meaning.
