IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two line graphs illustrate the results of speed cameras over an eight-year period since the instillation of these cameras. The graph demonstrates the road accident fatalities and speed cameras fines in Britain over the period of eight years.

Overall, the figure for fines of fast drivers increased significantly over the years while the number of deaths caused by road accidents showed less fluctuations over the years.

The numbers of fast-driving fines were 200,000 in the first year and gradually increased to above 800,000 in the 5th year. Moreover after this year the fines rose abruptly and reached to1,600,000 in the 8th year. That figure showed a significant change after the 5th year.

Fatalities that are caught by cameras showed little change during the years but there numbers were already high in the first year compared to the fines. In the first year the numbers of people died because of road accidents were almost 3,100.This fIgure slightly increased to almost 3,300 in the 4th year then slightly declined to 3,000. These fines remained in the range between 3,000 to 3,400 over an eight-year period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response only partially addresses the prompt. While the student attempts to describe the two line graphs, the information provided is incomplete and inaccurate in places. Crucially, the student completely omits the data presented in the tables regarding people's opinions on speed cameras, which is a major part of the task prompt. Furthermore, the interpretation of the data contains confusion, such as stating that 'Fatalities that are caught by cameras showed little change,' which misinterprets the relationship between the two distinct metrics. Ideas are limited and under-developed, preventing the response from achieving a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident with an introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within paragraphs do not flow logically. For instance, the transition between discussing the fines and the fatalities lacks smooth cohesive links. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or repetitively, such as the repeated use of 'over the years' and 'in the first year', making the overall structure feel somewhat disjointed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'significantly', 'abruptly', and 'fatalities', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, including 'instillation' instead of 'installation', and confusing 'fines' with the people paying them. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, restricting the vocabulary score to this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues like 'their numbers were' and 'these fines remained' when referring to fatalities. Punctuation errors, missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases also occur throughout the text, though meaning can usually be deciphered despite the frequent errors.
