Student answer (Band 5.5)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting data from both the graphs and the tables, but some areas are under-developed or contain inaccuracies. While the overall increase in fines and the general fluctuation in road fatalities are noted, the specific mention of numbers like 'two lac' uses non-standard terminology for an international English test, and certain survey percentages are approximated or slightly misstated, such as 72 percent instead of 71 percent. The overview outlines the main trends clearly enough, but the lack of precise data handling and minor omissions regarding the survey tables prevent the response from moving to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay attempts a coherent overall arrangement by dividing the information into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the graphs and tables. However, the progression is somewhat disrupted by erratic paragraphing and spacing issues. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes mechanically, such as 'contrary to that' and 'while remaining has no idea about it', which leads to awkward transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical nature of the linking devices holds the response at this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate basic information about the charts, but the range is limited. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'fluctuated' and 'installation', but this is offset by noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices like 'two lac' and 'people's thought', and repetitive phrasing. Spelling and word-choice errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To progress, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of precise, task-appropriate vocabulary and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical errors. There are noticeable errors in article usage, such as 'illustrates number of drivers' instead of 'illustrates the number', missing plural forms, subject-verb agreement issues like 'while remaining has no idea', and punctuation faults. While these errors rarely completely impede understanding, frequent grammatical inaccuracies and a limited control over sentence structures keep the score at this level.
