SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graphs display the number of drivers in Britain caught driving too fast and the amount of people killed in a road accident over the period of eight years since the speed cameras were introduced while the table display the outcome of the survey on people opinions on speed cameras.
Overall, the graph shows the rate of speed camera fines have increased over the years while reaching its peak at the 8th year with over a million in fines while the road accident fatalities have been fluctuating over the years but with nothing less than 2,500 accident per year, However the table shows the displease in the speed cameras through the people opinions.
In details, the speed camera fines were at its lowest in year one with 200,000 thousand fines which kept a steady increase till the 4th years before increasing drastically between the 6th and the 8th year which was from around 800,000 thousand to 1.6 million naira. Moreover, the road accident fatalities started from 3,100 in year one while it had a little increase in year 2 and 3 with 3,300 before experiencing a decrease in year 4 to 3,000 then later increase in year 5 then kept steady throughout the remaining years.
In contrast, the table shows the amount of people who do not things the speed camera reduces the number of accidents with over 60%, while over 71% thinks that they were installed to raise revenue, the people with over 56% think that the speed cameras on the road are too many.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the two graphs and the survey tables, providing an overview of the main trends. However, some aspects are under-developed or inaccurately reported. For instance, the student states that road accident fatalities 'kept steady throughout the remaining years' after year five, despite minor fluctuations shown in the data. Additionally, the overview mentions fines reaching 'over a million in fines' and later cites '1.6 million naira', which introduces irrelevant information ('naira') and a slight imprecision regarding the currency/unit. While a clear format is maintained, the support and extension of data points remain limited, preventing the response from reaching a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, trend body paragraph, and survey body paragraph. Information is logically grouped, and cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'In details', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion can at times feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive. For example, sentences are heavily chained with coordinating conjunctions like 'while' and 'then', which occasionally disrupts the natural progression and flow of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the graphical data from the tabular survey results, showing elements typical of a higher level while retaining some mechanical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and adequate for basic task accomplishment. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'fluctuating', 'drastically', and 'revenue', but makes noticeable errors in word choice and form, such as 'displease' instead of 'displeasure' or 'disapproval', and 'does not things' instead of 'does not think'. Furthermore, there is an inappropriate injection of the word 'naira' when describing British speed camera fines. Spelling and word-form errors occasionally require the reader to slow down, and the range of vocabulary remains restricted to fairly standard descriptors without demonstrating flexibility or precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar exhibits a limited range of structures, relying on a mix of simple sentences and longer, complex sentences that often contain structural faults. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'the table display' instead of 'displays', 'at its lowest in year one with 200,000 thousand fines' (redundancy and article omission), and 'over 71% thinks' instead of 'think'. Punctuation is also weak, particularly the excessive use of commas to string independent clauses together without proper coordination or full stops. These recurring errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader, keeping the control of grammar at this level.
