IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graphs illustrate the number of drivers who have been caught driving at a fast speed as recorded by the speed cameras on roads and the total number of people killed in the road accidents after installment of the speed cameras in the Britain.

As recorded by the camera fines imposed on the drivers driving too fast has increased significantly over a period of 8 years with the lowest of 200,000 in first year to a maximum of 1,600,000 in the eighth year which is almost 8 times the initial ones. Further the fines rose dramatically between sixth and seventh year.

However it can be observed that there isn't any dramatic change in the statistics of the road accidents as each year the number is either near to equal or there is a slight increase or decrease starting at about 3100 in the first year.Nevertheless the lowest number of accidents were observed in the fourth-year of the intallment which is 3000.

from the graphs as well as the table based on people's opinions it is clear that the speed camers are mainly installed as a source of revenue rather than improvement of road safety as people are of the opinion that the cameras do not minimize the number of accidends despite being installed in large number.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main contrast accurately: fines rise from about 200,000 to 1.6 million, while fatalities fluctuate without a comparable upward trend. The sharp increase between years six and seven is also selected appropriately. However, the report does not cover the survey results in enough detail: it mentions the revenue-versus-safety view and doubts about effectiveness, but omits the key percentages and the finding that 56% considered there to be too many cameras. Some data are also inaccurate: fatalities begin at about 3,150, not 3,100, and the lowest figure is around 3,100 in years four and six, rather than 3,000 in year four. A fuller overview and more precise coverage of all three survey questions would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable sequence, moving from the fines graph to fatalities and then to public opinion, and paragraph breaks help distinguish these topics. Linking expressions such as “However” and “Nevertheless” show an attempt to connect contrasting information. However, the progression is not fully controlled: the final paragraph combines several survey conclusions without clearly separating the three questions or supporting them with figures. Some transitions are awkward or repetitive, and the opening does not provide a clear overview of the main patterns. Improve the organisation by giving an overview after the introduction, then grouping the graph trends and survey findings into clearly focused paragraphs, with comparisons linked explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “increased significantly,” “rose dramatically,” “statistics,” and “source of revenue,” which helps communicate the main trends and opinions. There is also some variation in how you describe change. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “driving at a fast speed,” “camera fines imposed,” and “lowest number of accidents.” Spelling errors, including “installment,” “camers,” and “accidends,” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim for standard chart-report language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe drivers as “caught speeding,” refer to “speeding fines,” and use “fatalities” or “road deaths” consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a clause beginning “as each year.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but errors recur in sentence structure, articles, agreement, and punctuation. For example, “As recorded by the camera fines imposed on the drivers driving too fast has increased” has an unclear subject and incorrect agreement; “in the Britain” uses an unnecessary article; and “in first year” needs an article. There are also run-on or poorly punctuated sentences, such as the sentence ending “first year.Nevertheless.” Practise building clear subject–verb structures and separating complete ideas with appropriate punctuation.
