IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the number of drivers in Britain who have been caught driving too fast by speed cameras placed on roads, and the number of people killed in road accidents, over an eight-year period since the introduction of speed cameras. The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graphs illustrate the variations in speed camera fines for high-speed driving and corresponding road accident fatalities for the course of eight years. The data also highlights people's point of view on reasons for installation of speed cameras and their relationship with road accidents. Individuals' opinion regarding the number of speed cameras installed on the roads is also described.
The first graph shows a gradual increase of speed camera fines for the first six years from 200,000 to 800,000 but a sharp increase for the next two years, jumping from 800,000 to its double, 1,600,000. The second describes the number of road accident deaths during the same course of time. If we observe the alterations in road fatalities, the number keeps fluctuating between 3,000 to 3,500 for continuous eight years. Although the graph for fines has been showing an increasing curve, road accidents show somehow a constant form of behaviour.
Talking about the opinion of people on whether the speed cameras reduce the number of road accidents, 32 percent of people believe they do have a role in reducing them but on the other hand 62 percent voted against it. However, 8 percentage did not even know about its role in road accidents. For installation reasons, 26 percent voted speed cameras are installed to improve road safety, 71 percent voted the reason that they want to generate revenue and 3 percent do not know about it. Asking about the number of speed cameras on roads, 56 percent voted for too many cameras, 19 percent for too few, 17 percent for about right and 8 percent did not know.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The report covers the graphs and all three survey questions, and it identifies the main contrast: fines rise substantially while fatalities remain broadly stable. The figures for fines are mostly accurate, although the increase is described as gradual only through year six, and the stated 800,000 at that point is slightly above the chart’s approximate 780,000. More importantly, the survey result is misreported: 60%, not 62%, said cameras do not reduce accidents. The overview could also be clearer and more selective by explicitly summarising the survey’s dominant views, especially that most respondents thought cameras were installed to raise revenue and that there were too many. These inaccuracies and uneven development limit the precision of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph describing the two graphs, and a final paragraph covering the survey. This makes the information easy to follow, and contrasts such as “Although the graph for fines…” help connect the trends. However, the opening lists the task components rather than giving a concise overview of the key findings, and some transitions feel mechanical, including “Talking about” and “Asking about.” The graph paragraph also moves through the data in a somewhat repetitive way, with “The first graph” and “The second” rather than more precise linking or comparison. A more focused overview and smoother transitions between the chart and survey information would strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends and opinions, including “gradual increase,” “sharp increase,” “fluctuating,” and “revenue.” These choices communicate the main information, and the writer attempts some less common phrasing. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a formal report: “people's point of view,” “for the course of eight years,” and “constant form of behaviour.” “Voted” is also not the most suitable verb for reporting survey responses; “said” or “believed” would be more natural. Some repetition of “number” and “reason” could be reduced through more precise alternatives. Greater control of collocation and a more consistently formal register would make the descriptions clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a successful contrast structure in “Although the graph for fines has been showing an increasing curve, road accidents show…” Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not generally obstruct the message. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. In “from 800,000 to its double, 1,600,000,” the reference “its double” is awkwardly formed; “to double that figure” would be clearer. The phrase “between 3,000 to 3,500” uses an incorrect paired construction; write “between 3,000 and 3,500.” There is also inconsistent tense choice in “has been showing” alongside present-tense descriptions. More consistent tense use and accurate comparative structures would improve control.
