The tables show the results of a survey on people's opinions on speed cameras.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
SPEED CAMERA FINES and ROAD ACCIDENT FATALITIES
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Given graphs represents the number of drivers caught over-speeding by camers, and number of people killed road accidents, over eight years. The tables represent results of a servey on people's opinions.
Overall, there has been a gradual increase in fines in few years and there was a big increase while accidents had slight ups and downs.
In the first year there were 200,000 and 3100 accidents. Next year there were around 300,000 fines and 400,000 fines by third year, while road accident fatalities remained at 3500 in both years. In fourth year there were around 480,000 fines and 3000 fatalities. By the fifth year number of fatalities reached 3100 and dropped by 50 in next year, while number of fines reached 800,000. In last two years number of fines reached 1.2 million and than 1.6 million respectively. On the other hands number of fatalities remained between 3050 to 3100 in last two years.
When people were asked if speed cameras reduce number of accidents 32% said yes, 60% said no and 8% said they don't know. Second question was about the reason of installation of cameras 26% said to improve safety, 71% said to raise revenue and 3% didnot knew. Last question was about number of cameras on road 56% said too many, 19% said too few, 17% said about right and 8% did not knew.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The report covers both the charts and all three survey questions, and it gives a useful overall summary: fines rose substantially while fatalities fluctuated. Most survey percentages are accurately reported. However, several chart figures are misread: fatalities were about 3,300 in years two and three, not 3,500; fines in year three were about 380,000 rather than 400,000; and fatalities in the final years were around 3,200 and 3,350, not 3,050–3,100. The overview also says fines increased gradually, although the rise accelerated markedly in the final years. To strengthen the report, check the plotted values carefully and make the overview capture both the sharp late increase in fines and the broadly stable fatality trend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing the graph, and a final paragraph covering the survey. This makes the different sources of information easy to follow. Sequencing expressions such as “In the first year,” “By the fifth year,” and “Last question” help guide the reader through the data. Some links are mechanical or unclear, however. “Next year” is followed by two figures for fines without clearly distinguishing the second and third years, and “On the other hands” does not form a clear contrast. Grouping the graph data more systematically—for example, describing the fines trend and then the fatalities trend—would improve progression and reduce ambiguity.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to describe the main trends and survey results, with useful terms such as “gradual increase,” “fatalities,” “remained,” and “installation.” However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors reduce precision, including “camers,” “servey,” “didnot,” and “did not knew.” Some expressions are also awkward for a formal report, such as “big increase” and “reason of installation.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and vary the language used to describe change. For example, “rose sharply” is more precise than “big increase,” while “the main reason for installing cameras” is more idiomatic than “the reason of installation.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, and the main information is generally understandable. There are, however, recurring errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms. The opening should be “The graphs represent,” rather than “Given graphs represents,” and “people killed in road accidents” needs the preposition “in.” In “number of fatalities reached 3100 and dropped by 50 in next year,” articles are missing, and the time reference would be clearer with “the following year.” The phrase “did not knew” uses the wrong verb form after “did”; use “did not know.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and past-tense patterns, while continuing to practise longer sentences with clear clause structure.
